The idea is that if you're knowledgeable on a subject you can create a "Lens" that "focuses" the information on the subject.

For instance, I love robots. So, I created a lens about the subject, All About Robots. That points people to other places to get information, has news feeds, Flickr photos, books on Amazon, etc.

The interface is still a bit (very) buggy, but the idea intrigues me.

I too am a bit confused by this Squidoo site. They have no information on their frontpage to what exactly the idea behind it is and it appears that information is only within their FAQ. Seems like it needs to go back into beta

I was a beta tester very early on, and to be completely honest, I have no freaking clue what the guys at Squidoo are trying to build. The interface still looks the same as it did when I tested it, which is to say.... very "beta" ish :)
