Declan McCullagh of News.com covers this story about a new bill proposed in Congress that would require ISPs to snoop on their users.

This law would modify existing privacy laws and require that ISPs maintain detailed logs of user’s activities for law enforcement and other agencies. Some of the data retained would include clickstream data from sites being hosted on an ISP’s servers, such as blogs, forums, and websites.

Simply linking to a site that might contain child pornography would become a serious federal felony.

Sonia Arrison, director of technology studies at the free-market Pacific Research Institute in San Francisco, said the Internet Safety Act “follows in a long line of bad laws that are written in the name of protecting children.”
