New Design: A work in progress today

As you can see, our new design by Chris Pearson is in the process of being implemented.

You’ll see a few changes over the next several hours as Chris tweaks a few things around and we settle the design down into its new home.

I’ll also take a brief moment to introduce The Roaming Gnome himself – Aaron Brazell as one of our new columnists. Aaron will be writing a regular column here at The Blog Herald. We’ll also be announcing a few more correspondents in the near future.

In the meantime, enjoy the chaos.

Update: 10:18pm CST And no, not all of that whitespace is remaining. We have some other blocks to add and move around before things are finalized. And we’ll likely tweak a few things here and there in the days to come…

This is a much long overdue revamp and a very pleasant one. Nice work. What of the Flickr photos below?

I like it, very web 2.0. Hopefully we’re getting more than just a new design though?

Wow ! That is a kickass design and is about 56 notches above what you had.

Congrats on hiring the best and having him do it like it needed to be done !

I liked the earlier Kubrick styled theme and had got used to it. But this is very refreshing, like tasting a new cuisine :-)

We’ve added one columnist and are finalizing a news editor at the moment. More to come in a few days on that front.

Thanks Mike – unlike some others that will remain nameless, I followed 99% of what my designer said to do :)

Regarding your 10:18pm update … I assume you are talking about the whitespace to the right of these comments? (hint)

Nice design, nice update on the logo .. I like the new look. I particularly like the linking of the watch and job sites in here .. nice touch.

Like Abe .. I wonder about those Flickr images below .. two of ten are unavailable, Also, while I don’t often surf the archives .. surfing the categories now gives me one extra click to do that .. since they are on the archives page. Other than those items .. good job.

I like the look – can I ask what (if any) process you went through before deciding on the 1024 pixel width? Did you geather stats on what the majority resolution most of your readers use, or do we assume that most bloggers (who I presume are your main audience) browse at 1024×768? Still it’s interesting that you don’t lose out much if you browse at say 800×600 as that right-hand column is currently non-essential to the BH itself.

The only problem with this whole thing is that I’m no longer linked/on the blog roll.

    What a pity…

    Mike,

The blogroll is random and shows 12 random links from our very long blogroll. I can can assure you that you’re still there. We randomized this quite some time ago and limited the length.

Months ago when we had hoped to have this design out in March, we had decided to go at least 900px wide or so. Chris can probably shed more light on this (and he will be posting about the design over at his blog tomorrow) – but we started with 1024×768 and went from there.

Statistically though, we have an awful lot of folks browsing at 1024×768,

At this point the design is fairly stable and I would expect a bit of tweaking over the next several weeks – but this is pretty close to the end product :)
