Blog networks, micro style

Filed as News on September 17, 2006 5:06 am

Instablogs just launched two new gadget blogs, USB Gadgets and Travel Gadgets. The blog network now has 14 gadget blogs, a little micro blog network in its own.

I think it’s a pretty good idea, not making a humongous gadget site Engadget style. You’ll have to be a pretty die hard gadget fanatic (like me) to really browse these sites. Most of us (unlike me) tend to lean on a smaller niche rather than gadgets overall. Like mobile phones, HDTV, digital cameras, MP3 players and so on.

So Instablogs are doing the right thing, launching niche gadget blogs. They can link each other and therefore give a pretty solid gadget scope, but the fact that every site is focused on one thing (well… but you get the point) distances them from the major players like Engadget and Gizmodo.

That is a smart move for a blog network to make - so kudos to the guys at instablogs.

Going niche in an over-saturated gadget blog market is such a smart move.

I completely agree, as you can see. We’ll probably see it in other blog niches as well.

Yeah, you guessed it right. We are breaking Instablogs Network into small niche networks. This also helps a reader, who is more inclined towards particular topic instead of the developments going inside the whole industry. Nevertheless we do have a main Gadget blog Gizmowatch, where we do major stories related to gadget industry as a whole.

Since we have too many gadget bloggers, we started with Gadget niche, but we would be launching other micro blog networks too.

Yep, that’s why I also think if Know More Media play their cards right they can really take hold of many business niches.

I think the successful blog network will go deep, rather than wide. There’s lots to be said for sticking to a niche.

Again, I agree. I actually applied this on my fictional blog network over at my blog.

Thord … how long before fictional becomes reality. You can learn from all the mistakes that blog networks have made over the past 12 months and really kick some serious niche butt. :-)
