We’re all Time Magazine’s Person of the Year

I’m a little surprised and confused with this one.

Time magazine named ‘You’ as its person of the year Saturday, with a mirror cover designed to reflect the importance of user-generated Internet content as a driving force in the modern world.

User-generated content on websites such as YouTube has proved the latest twist in the Internet revolution, with the site attracting millions of users and earning its founders $1.65 billion when it was bought by Google earlier this year.

Yes, you, me and everybody else — we’re all Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2006. But why now? Users have been generating content since time immemorial. Yup, including spammers and sploggers alike. There are also legions of dedicated forums and groups generating the same content way back in the 90s.

So now that everyone’s person of the year, Time won’t have anyone to put to the front cover next year.

    Person of the year is a tored idea. BBC already called 2005 as year of the digital citizen. So, what’s new?
