It seems that for a lot of these features and abilities, it is not that social news can't do it, but instead that the "big dogs" in Digg or Netscape don't.

Unfolding Events: Newsvine handles this in a slightly different way. Newsvine automatically receives and displays the AP feed, no need for users to submit such a story. Thus an AP story that starts as just two sentences breaking current news will be updated almost instantaneously as the AP themselves update it. Newsvine also allows users to edit their bookmarks after submission, so new details and links to further information can be included directly into the bookmark, without the need for an Anchor or editor or for the reader to skim the comments.

Photography: While there is not a dedicated photo section on newsvine, users do have the ability to both bookmark outside photo sites as well as include their own within their articles. Users can also take advantage of groups to share their photographs in the absence of a relevant category. Artsvine [artsvine.newsvine.com] is a rather popular group for all arts including photography.

"It would be a slam dunk for a social news site to take advantage of the Flickr API and other photo sites with APIs."

Speaking of Flickr, newsvine does use the Flickr API to allow users to search Flickr's database of picture for relevant pictures by tags that allow sharing through the use of a Creative Commons license.

Sex: The "hot-chicks" tag. Not to mention there are a few groups that deal with relationships, sex, and everything in between.

I would add one more area to that list: style. There's a whole alternate universe out there, beyond the reaches of existing social networking sites: fashion, beauty, interior decor, even food barely gets a look in.

I think we need to remember that digg isn't the best of the web; it's the best of the web as selected by young geeky males.

good points!
regarding unfolding events - I think that the difference you point between mainstream media using editors and user content news site might not need to be reduced. In order to get the whole picture right - you do need the mainstream media but to have an immediate unfold news, short and focused - you can enjoy the benefits of user powered content. As a social psychologist minded to the web 2.0 users behavior - I do think web 2.0 users and mainstream media users have different needs.
