To compliment your point that "often times the big social news sites tend to look more like popularity contests" here is a quick comic:

While agreeing on nearly every issue raised, I have to disagree with the voting by source idea.

I dont believe rating an entire source based on a single story is a good idea. Everyone has a bad day; however, perhaps you can track how many "bad days" a source has and rate the source based on that? Some kind of a weighted statistic of sorts.

For example, if only one in ten stories are deemed valuable, that source will be regarded as less valuable in general than a source that has an eight in ten value rating.

Using this method, it is still possible to recover from a bad post, or a series of bad posts, instead of essentially being "blacklisted" as a "bad source."

I agree with the Anonymity to a certain point, I think it would be a great idea to hide the user until the story hits the homepage, having a users story hit the homepage is important to a lot of users. They like to see their name "in lights". I personally would like to remain anonymous until my story reaches the homepage that way I would know for sure my story was voted on because of the interest not because I'm popular, I would like to still have the recognition on the Homepage. The problem with this is the sheer amount of stories submitted and finding these without the use of friends, I suppose you could still show what your friends are voting on just not submitting.
