Call me a traditionalist, but I believe in user participation, not user control. I've chimed in in more details on my blog at the news2020project dot com.

I think that the fact that Kevin Rose was bold enough to post the code himself in the title of his blog post that you quoted, along with the word Digg This means that he was clearly putting himself at the forefront of the fight. After doing that, he bound himself to his users and can;t really distance himself anymore.

As far as control, well, I think he has about as much control over the Digg community as someone riding a bus -- he can get off the bus at any stop, but he obviously is not in control of where the bus is heading.

[...] Regardless, as I cruise the internet highways and byways looking at the different articles on this as it was happening, it appears Kevin was a bit overwhelmed with user response to the whole thing. At one point taking the submit page completely down to stop people from resubmitting the hack over and over again. Did Digg die today? I don’t think so, unless of course the lawyers shut them down which I seriously doubt that’ll happen either. However, would anyone miss the site if it was shutdown? I’m not sure about that one. I’ve never been “Dugg to the frontpage” and I don’t mind fessing up to seeding my own posts. That practice might be frowned up, but I don’t care. It’s there, and I can, so I do (the obligatory I qualify that by saying I try ot be responsible about it). Yeah… I do, but not always. It pisses me off that the site got big by asking people just like me to submit my stuff to them, then when they got big enough and the major media outlets took over, it’s virtually impossible to get something on there unless your well funded and have gazillions of readers to Digg your stuff or your part of some undisclosed “in crowd” or super secret network. Then when you do submit your own stuff those in the super secret in crowd bury your ass faster than a cat burying a turd and your made to feel like the dreggs of this virtual society no better than a street worker that whores her own to every passing potential John. Bah, Digg has it’s place and catering to the media outlets is not it, they’ve lost site of what value they really bring to the internet. If I wanted to read what CNN or Forbes had to say, I’d subsribe to their feeds. I go to Digg to see what other bloggers are blogging about, which I can’t really do because it’s all about CNN and Forbes, et al…. [...]
