Lorelle,

It is amazing what being nice can do. I vary the tone of my C&D letter regularly from "nice guy" to "I will Sue You". Many of my C&Ds aren't even recognizable as such but I call them that because they serve the same purpose, telling the person to do this or face further actions.

I've used DNSStuff in the past and do like it. I still slightly favor DomainTools though DNSStuff and SamSpade.org both remain in my bookmarks as backups. DNSStuff also has some other very useful tools so thank you for reminding me of it!

Thank you very much for your input!

Well done, Jonathan. Excellent work. It's amazing, though, how easy it is to get a lot of stuff removed with a simple, fairly nice, email before hitting harder with a cease and desist. Though when the bigger guns are called for, I love my cease and desist form. Very threatening. ;-)

Also, I have been using http://www.dnsstuff.com/ for years, though now the first thing you see is a membership fee on their page, but their offerings are still free for the casual user. If you use it a lot, then definitely pay the small fee as it helps keep their vast domain and spam searching services going.

Everton,

I gave a link in the article to a site called Domain Tools (domaintools.com) It's probably the best site out there for discovering who the host of a domain is.

Just punch in the domain and look under "server information" it should have the name of the host along with the other details about the server.

If that fails, click the "W" by the IP address of the server and that should take you to another page with more information and an even clearer picture of who the host is.

If you have trouble with a specific case, send me an email and I'll have a look at it for you!

Hope that helps!
