[...] Brand You Revisited “It was true then of Web sites as it is now of blogs: anyone can have one. And because the cost of entry with tools such as Joomla, Blogger, Typepad, Movable Type, and WordPress is so much lower, many people do. What guides your choices of blogs to visit, to comment on, to subscribe to? The answer is quite simple: branding.” I had to start of with this one as I unfortunately still was very skeptical about branding when leaving my first comment to this post. Luckily did Valeria Maltoni not take it personal when I asked if personal branding isn’t just a clever way of saying reputation and doubted that the concept was more than a buzz word. Instead she provided an excellent reply and got a conversation going. Quite fitting for someone who is known as the Conversation Agent and thus in perfect compliance with both her personal and her blog’s brand. [...]

Valeria, I am not sure if I have communicated what I want to do in my welcome post and in the latest post on why you should blog with community in mind clearly enough. The thing is that it is not that easy to explain. Especially not when you are practically having to relearn your English in the process as I am :-)

You could say that I am trying to relearn and expand on my and your knowledge about sociological systems theory while trying to apply it to the blogging itself. At the moment there is however a discrepancy between what I do and what I want to be doing in as so far as I concentrate far to much on the blogging part.

Currently do my blog probably look like another blog about blogging, which it really wasn't supposed to be. Still is how I post and what I write strongly influenced by how I think about communication. Only have I not yet been able to integrate the conceptualization in the process.

As for the story of me am I still not sure if I think that is relevant to what I write about. Actually do I still think that while personal branding is a great thing it is not for me at this point. I see myself getting more transparent with time, but hesitate simply stating everything up front.

I would certainly not mind having someone with your background and skills take a look at the draft I have for the about page as it surely would help me get it finished.

Jan:

Let me know how I can be of service. The about page is a service you provide to readers and visitors. It's your personal exhibit where you can choose to integrate the story of you for your blog's audience.

I'm glad you are working on rescuing the word "circular" with communication -- your intent if I understand correctly is to build on many voices and move forward. I look forward to welcoming you at Conversation Agent.

I know, I know... I am still working on the personal branding side of things :-)

Writing a decent about page is definitely not an easy task when you cannot figure out how much of yourself you want to lay out where everyone can read it. I do have a draft, but judging how good it is can be particularly difficult when it, in part at least, is about yourself.

Actually I shouldn't have made the buzz word comment because I know how you write on Conversation Agent, which I have subscribed to for a while. A couple of your articles will be part of future link posts of mine in fact.

Indeed you can think of my blog as a loop that feeds itself. Actually it is not a bad picture at all. Only can it not feed itself in isolation, which may sound like a contradiction, but really isn't. Hence do I thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment and thus helping feed the loop.

Hello Jan:

Thank you for stopping by.

I do not think they are the same, actually. Reputation is something of an outcome of your activities. You build character, you have a reputation -- it is given to you by others. A brand is something you come to own at a very deep and personal level. It is the sum total of what it feels like to be with you, what you look like, what you say, etc. I stay away from buzz words as much as I can. I'm a linguist, to me words have meaning.

The name of your blog -- circular communication -- is intriguing. My first reaction, before I read what it means to you, was to think of a loop that feeds itself, with follow-through and ticklers on the way. And I couldn't find anything on you, the host.

Isn't personal branding just a clever way of saying reputation? You make a lot of good points, but sometimes I find that Buzz words are more in the way than really helpful.

Dan:

Welcome to the conversation and thank you for taking the time to reach out with your comment. A while back I read a very interesting take on personal branding by Stedman Graham called "Build your Own Life Brand" that might be of interest to you given the focus of your blog. I see you are an active member of the Boston Chapter of the AMA. I am for Philadelphia.
