I use ad-blocking myself, but I am sure it does ut down on the revenue that can be generated if these programs did not exist. I am curious why people would say they are illegal. Is it really illegal to use ad-blocking?

If a web owner wants to make money tell them to go out and find a real job, stop making money exploiting visitors.

That is such a great comment there buddy... if all web site owners has to find a so-called real job what would you be browsing? NOTHING as there would be no one creating websites you dumbass. Obviously you have zero intelligence let alone understand the concept of running costs.

For the rest of the comments, you all have valid points. Ads help people who run personal sites or communities but as long as they are relevant to the website then I don't see the issue. I'm all for blocking adult content on a site that is for all ages for example but to block ads just because you do not like them, well that may end up costing the site owner and may cause them to shut down their site.

I always block advertisements, never see them :) I don't care about webmasters' income revenue, they make money off spamming visitors with their ads so more and more people are simply not supporting this racket.

If I want to buy something, I'll go to the store, online it's my Internet and I don't want to see any ads period.

Redwall: It's going to be interesting to see how and if that works out. My hopes is that new promotion schemes do arise that benefit advertisers, publishers and users.

Rose: I've been experimenting with ABP since I wrote this column and I've noticed some strange results. For example, the ads here on the BH still show up fine. The sponsor ads at least. It's interesting to see how the Internet changes when you switch it on and off. I honestly don't know which I like better right now.

I agree with you about "evolving advertising so that adblockers aren’t needed." If ads weren't intrusive, we wouldn't need adblockers.

Jeremy: True, in its own way, and indicative of the problem for smaller Webmasters.

Candice: I hadn't thought of that angle but some of it is going to depend on how the adblocker works. If the adblocker still downloads the code the person might be labeled a viewer even if they never saw the ads. That could hurt it. Of course, this will also depend some on the layout of the site and the type of ads. Sometimes the types of people who use adblockers might be the exact target.

Darrell: That seems fair enough to me. I don't run ads on my site but I certainly wouldn't objecet to that.

Redwall: I have to agree that some of this has been talked to death, but I think there needs to be more focus on evolving advertising so that adblockers aren't needed. That's more of what I was trying to focus on.

Thanks for the links!

Hasn't this topic been argued about to death? :D

Browser blocking is evil, and I think users have a right to block ads. Here's some further reading on this topic if you want it:

I use Ad blocking (both in Firefox and IE7) only if publishers have ads that block content.

These are the types of Ads that expand without permission, and are VERY annoying.

I also block ads that I find tasteless.

Example: some ads on a news site I came across were displaying naked bums of women...which I found to be rather odd for the site.

A couple of quick clicks later and those Ads were banned for life...although I no longer see the person's header anymore.

People who run adblockers are not people who are likely to click on ads in the first place (because obviously, they really don't like them), so on the plus side, adblocking probably increases CTR...
