Which explains why this was a tough article series to write, and many didn't understand it, but ended up being great fun to research. There are rats everywhere. :D

'Let us not tolerate outrageous conspiracy theories' - George W Bush

The above statement alone is enough to make me take Conspiracy Theories seriously. Also, most are alternative theories. People were scoffed at for saying the earth was round, that we will all be microchipped, that UFO's exist. Princess DI is back in the mainstream, still un resolved.
Conspiracy Theory is a term used to belittle opposing points of view.
Your efforts here should make people smell a rat.
Go and checkout the Chemtrail conspiracy theory, then start looking at the sky again and make your own mind up.
We do create our own reality, ever noticed how the people who are always moaning they are ill are always ill? or how a bad day gets worse? Do a little thinking for yourself, the truth is exploding at the moment, the veil is lifting.

@ian in hamburg:

Why not? Conspiracy theories fill up our televisions, books, movies, and even our music. Why not our blogs? Opps, too late.

There is indeed a lot of money being made on conspiracy theories, and it's developed into a big industry. Blogs not only cover, report, and promote conspiracy theories, they also perpetuate them. And make money off them.

This series is a look at the process as well as the relationship blogs play in conspiracy theories. Hopefully, people will learn more about the role blogs play, and how to tell the truth behind the fantasies.

While most people equate conspiracy theories with politics and aliens, many bloggers attract a lot of attention by connecting "facts" in unrelated ways and declaring these as "truths". Recently, a lot of talk has been popping up on blogs about the "conspiracy" of WordPress to control WordPress Themes, thus control the income they can generate. The fact that WordPress wants to help WordPress Theme designers and users by creating a safe environment for all using WordPress Themes seems to be missing in a lot of "reports" and "assumptions" on the issue of sponsored Themes as people make up things when there is no evidence and they want to assign blame on a bad guy. I expect similar "plots" to come into play when WordPress Plugin authors start wanting attention, and WordPress works to protect users from malicious WordPress Plugins. After all, Matt has said repeatedly that he wants world domination. ;-)

Blogs are reporting on tons of conspiracy theories on the war in Iraq, and soon blogs will be filled with more on the upcoming US election. Conspiracy theories can be any size and deal with a variety of subjects, so why not talk about how they work, why people are fascinated by them, and how to make them work for you if you choose to go down that route.

Just because you don't believe, doesn't mean it might be true. :D The truth is out there. We just need to take the covers off conspiracy theories and talk about how they work and why. Maybe a long the way, we'll convert those who believe to the facts.

Well, I don't see a tag or category for humor so forgive me if I appear dense, but what's the point of this series on conspiracy theories? Why encourage people to muddy the waters further? Is it all in the name of generating hits, traffic and ultimately, money? If so, then imho it's pretty cynical and counter-productive. With so much to sift through out there, the world needs more clarity and truth, not BS.
