I thought that the "how to design.." would actually also give us some visual display and steps about how to design the ads..
Well, "the advice" was cool though..

I would add- if you can, adapt the ad for its context. The same ad will work well on one blog, poorly on another.

Also, choose your ad sizes well. 125x125 works well because our when our eyes focus they capture that banner at a glance. However, a 468x60 banner or skyscraper adds need to be scanned so your message automatically takes more effort to be understood.

Also maybe another good point is to put the ad on site that has alot of traffic.

That usually helps.

Nice job.
I've had good success with blogads.com (delete the name if you don't want to plug them) and they are ALL text.
I'm a boomer writing mostly for boomers, so I need a targeted audience. I bought an ad on a financial advice website that is rampant with profanity. I use mild profanity on my site so I invited readers to "cleanse themselves" by visiting my site.

Points are:
- well written all text ads on sites that are ad light, can work really well.
- be true to your blog.
- it's not easy. Write and rewrite. Test.
- you don't have to spend big bucks if you will settle for growing your blog more slowly.

BTW: I'm not selling anything at my blog. Just love to watch the numbers climb. Pure ego.
