The problem I have with Trackback is it just doesn't work. I just started a Blogger blog and added Haloscan for Trackback. I sent out two pings; both times Haloscan said they were successful, but both times they never showed up on the target blogs, which did have Trackback.

I've looked through several of the blogs I'm interested in, going through dozens of posts, and hundreds of comments, and I only saw just 1 successful Trackback!

It just doesn't work.

I've never really thought about the distinction between trackbacks and pingbacks, and just assumed when people say 'trackback' they also lump pingbacks into that statement. That is, they're describing both.

If the distinction is made though, I would agree that trackbacks are largely dead. I know of very few people who manually trackback anything, which makes sense when you consider how convenient it is to let an automatic pingback do all the work.

Indeed, I'd consider pingback an evolution of trackback. It's the newer, better version of effectively the same thing.

I definitely don't think Trackback is dead nor should it be deleted. It should definitely be expanded upon, but it's extremely useful for research and relation purposes and also to know who's responding a topic or post.
