BJ -

I have seen a lot of people get great value from initiating a conversation on LinkedIn through a question, yes. Not long ago it helped me collect material for further research and consideration as I prepared a post. My philosophy is to keep the ration between giving and taking at a healthy 2/3 to 1, which is the same way I look at conversation. You listen twice as much as you talk.

I see a lot of value in LinkedIn as a platform for ideas as well. I received some questions about how students getting ready to graduate could really beef up their knowledge about what's out there, who's talking about what and how to gain some traction in networking. So I asked the question on LinkedIn and received great responses from seasoned marketers and will be using that to create an informative blog post to share with those same students.
