SiteMeter is a popular web statistics tool, used by lots of bloggers, including the ones in Nick Denton’s Gawker network. I’ve used it myself in the past, but found that other solutions were more useful. Still, it has a lot of followers, so the recent downtime on S24, S45 and S48 numbered accounts is probably a big deal. SiteMeter hasn’t been able to restore the lost statistics during the downtime, which is said to be caused by an “extended power outage”. Obviously their power backup systems weren’t up to speed.
More in an official announcement. You might want to take the advice of Quick Online Tips and use multiple services for online web statistics.

Statcounter was also down over the weekend with similar stats lost. Do these 2 companies use the same place to host their databases etc??

It appears like it was an explosion over at The Planet’s datacenter that caused all this. See this follow-up story!

Good luck with sitemeter. I used them for many years, and this was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Way too much downtime and lost $$ on our business sites.
