I'm just starting out with advertisers, and since I use adblockers, and assume others do, also, I've decided that any advertiser I accept will get a small review along with the link/ad in the sidebar. I'm only accepting appropriate advertising for my site, and there is nothing I wouldn't recommend. I only have one now, but as the site grows, or I get off my duff and contact potential advertisers, I expect to add more in the same way.
Adsense doesn't work for me, and neither does contextual advertising. I think my potential advertisers will get more "bang for their buck" than the standard ones on blog sites, which are beginning to cause visitors to suffer from ad blindness.

P.S.
Lorelle, I've loved your WTF series. I so agree with everything you've said. If it's not value-added for my readers, it does not go on the site at all. :)

Ads are just such a part of our lives, I think people that complain just do so because it's easy to reach the person who is carrying the ads. If TV had immediate feedback, the overwhelming response would be negative.

Just Love these Ads... that's the headline over my ads.

I dislike auto-play, I have one on my site now, however. Since I'm don't have enough traffic, I can't control what is served.

I dislike contextual ads - mainly from ebay - that say "Lorelle - Find Lorelle and much more on eBay.

I do think that graphic ads help differentiate new content from the sidebar stuff.

I think 125x125 ads displayed here add much to the clutter you dislike.

BTW: I hate junk mail.
