WordPress for iPhone downloaded over one hundred thousand times

Filed as News on September 18, 2008 3:49 pm

Well over 100,000 iPhone users have downloaded the official WordPress for iPhone application, according to the WordPress for iPhone blog, and based on figures Automattic has received from Apple.

The vast majority (nearly three in every five downloads) come from the US, with one in five downloads from Europe, 8% from the UK, and the rest from Canada, Japan, Australia, and other countries.

What the numbers can’t tell is how many people are actively using the software. That’s a feature which should be available to developers in a future release of the iPhone firmware, according to Steve Jobs’ keynote speech earlier in the year.

It’s also impossible to tell exactly how many times other applications have been downloaded, as Apple doesn’t divulge that information except to individual developers.

As an iPhone user, I haven’t done any serious blogging using the handset, though it’s great for some housekeeping tasks such as moderating and responding to comments, editing typos, and such like. However, 100,000 people obviously thought they’d give it a go, which must be encouraging for Automattic.

According to the blog post, version 1.2 of the WordPress for iPhone application will include landscape mode, comment moderation, enhanced image options, and other tweaks. It should be available in the next few weeks.

I haven’t got an iPhone yet. But with some luck I will have one within the next 6 months. Then I will be using this wordpress application vigorously while I am on the road. I think it would be awesome to be able to work anywhere in the world and this is a great way to manage and reply to comments and promote your blog whilst outside

Definitely. It’s also good for some aspects of social networking, too, as there are apps for FaceBook, LinkedIn (I believe), etc. Also plenty of Twitter clients though they do seem to drain the battery quite quickly.

Thinking about it again, one of the main issues for me is not the entering of large amounts of text, but the fact that there’s no easy way to get photos into blog posts, because the file system isn’t available on non-jailbroken phones. It means you’re stuck with using photos from your gallery, or from a service such as Photobucket.

Yes, you can save images from the web to the photo library easily, but they often need editing, which is also tough on the iPhone.

It really depends what your style of blogging is.

Yeah, the wordpress application for the iPhone is an essential for any avid blogger. They need to be able to write about topics as they happen!

You’re waiting for your food at the restaurant and you’re able to create new articles for your blog in your spare time!

    Definately a great tool!
