Smugmug is the way I went when I discovered there was no stopping someone from stealing my photos as their own off Flickr. While it can be a little pricey (basic membership is now $40US), you can get your first year for cheaper than a Flickr pro account.

All you have to do is enter the promo code YAHOO (1/2 price on all levels of subscriptions for the first year) and referral code: XYIzvlyAxTPgo (saves you another $5). So $40/2 – 5 = $15.

In that light you can see it’s pretty cheap to check it out. (Actually I think you can get a 14 day trial for free first).

Your photos are safe, the galleries look amazing, and if you put some effort in, the customization options are pretty incredible too.

Great post. I’ve actually been using a wordpress plug in that finds creative commons photo’s automatically on Flickr and allows me to post with no issues really.

I actually had made the mistake of using some flickr photo’s that I wasn’t aware of that were “stripped” like you mentioned and I got a few nasty emails from the owners. EEK.

Since I got the plug in no problems. However I’m glad to see there are a few more alternatives. Thank you!

Linda: Sued, not to my knowledge but I could be wrong. I don’t hear about every case. But many have been threatened with legal action and paid money to prevent lawsuits. It is actually very rare for cases to result in a lawsuit and even more rare for a lawsuit to go all the way to a judgment. Less than 1% of all cases involving a legal dispute of any variety result in a suit and only a fraction of those go all the way.
