Turnkey Blog Solution for Parents

Turnkey Blog Solution for Parents

$50 a year to document your kids every millimeter of progress? If you want to join the already flooded niche of mommy and daddy bloggers, Web hosting company McKremie.com wants to introduce you to Kizzog.

Kizzogs are a “semi-custom personal blog” targeted to parents who want to blog but don’t have the time or technical knowledge to do so.

The portmanteau, which stumped me at first, is a combination of “kids” and “blog.”

Headers and sidebars within the password-protected site you ‘build’ are customized by uploading images of your children.

“A Kizzog will help capture the memories that will soon fade. Whether it’s capturing your son’s first steps or your daughter’s first soccer game the Kizzog helps you do this via your child’s own personal website. Kizzogs are the best way to share these memories with your family and friends.”

The all-inclusive service includes a domain name, 24/7 Web hosting with 24/7 tech support, 12 design options and password protection.

My question is this: If you’re just having a kid now, aren’t you likely young enough to grasp the basic concept of starting up a free blog?

What do you guys think?

  • Actually, it’s not a bad idea. I have a website for my son and I pay $80 per year just in hosting and the design is generic. I could host it for free but I don’t want everyone in the world looking at his website. (you never know)

    • Just thought you should know that some free blog hosting services like WordPress.com allow private blogs, fully protected and limited only to those with the password. It offers a lot of different layouts and options, and is integrated with social media tools, with easy embedding of images, podcasts, and videos, hosted onsite and off. Paying for a site gives you more control on design and Plugins and such, but if you want something basic and private, there are free choices out there.

The key to a site like this is not having a private site but being part of a network, a community that helps connect with other like minds and thinkers. Teens in Tech is a blog community for teenagers passionate about technology. Edublogs.org is a free blog hosting service and community for educators. I expect to see a lot more community-based blog networks.

However, this one isn’t free. It’s more like a scrapbook blog site rather than a community social network. That’s old think. I haven’t looked in depth. They might offer more features on image enhancement, editing, framing, and decorative scrapbook tools, but there are many such sites that have been around for a long time, often associated with genealogy and family history preservation, memoirs, and personal sites. Some of those are free at their basic level, with paid upgrades. Today, people want more than just a static billboard, even blog style. A few weeks just posting pictures and stories goes only so far without a sense of belonging and interactivity.

  • Hmmm….totally free WordPress blog with lots of easy to accomplish customizations and password protection OR $50/year to do the same thing with Kizzog. Tough decision. I think Blogger also has password protection? Not to mention that a Facebook account would also accomplish the same task.

BTW, “Kizzog” should be added to the list of worst web 2.0 names.
