Facebook Turns 5, Still Huge

FacebookCEO Mark Zuckerberg hands out free thank you gifts on Facebook, and talks about how the social network is letting people participate online using their real identities, and feeling safe about it.

The culture of the Internet has also changed pretty dramatically over the past five years. Before, most people wouldn’t consider sharing their real identities online. But Facebook has offered a safe and trusted environment for people to interact online, which has made millions of people comfortable expressing more about themselves.

He also links the Facebook retrospective, with screencaps of how the social network has evolved the last five years. Pretty interesting actually. Yes, those are the same images posted by TechCrunch and Inside Facebook to name a few.

The latter also shares the impressive figures Facebook can throw around, should any other social network get too cocky.

Impressive. More on Techmeme, where you might especially want to check out the VentureBeat post, focusing on how Facebook changed its focus to get its users to share more via the site.

  • Mark makes some good points. There are still those myspace criminal stories we get every couple months but the fact is millions have opened their lives to the net through facebook etc. People trust they are reasonably protected or at least that their privacy is respected. If you take reasonable precautions and update yourself on digital security issues like with This site you’ll probably be fine.

  • Facebook’s impact on my main blog’s growth has been massive. Particularly in the last year, it has been far and away my biggest referrer.

Thank goodness so much content is shared each month!
