How Do You Get RSS Subscribers To Visit Your Blog?

Oh look, VentureBeat rebranded itself a bit. I hadn’t noticed, despite glancing through all the updates from this blog on a daily basis. I read it through my RSS reader, and that is a problem for the publisher.

We already deducted that the massive footer ads will get you nowhere, unless you can sell them from a fixed price (don’t accept that, media buyers!). That means that you probably want your RSS readers to pop in on your site every now and then.

  • The only ways I can think of are:

    – Don’t put all content in the feed. Truncating is miserable and mean… but using rich content & widgets that RSS readers don’t display will get people onto your page

    – Post stuff people want to tweet and link to (or at least bookmark) — if I want to share a link to something, I’ll usually open it in my browser

    – Get people to post comments. That’s why I’m here.

  • I’ve been thinking about this for over four years now (that’s how long I have been blogging) and you can either have links inside the RSS feed to other postings on your site or change full content to short content, meaning up to 255 charactors.

Also, I don’t know about the ads inside the RSS Feed or in the footer, thats still up for debate with me.

  • Take up photography. People enjoy reading content via RSS, but they have to go to your site if they want to see the pictures. I’m starting to move towards more photo’s per post to get people to visit.

  • Thanks for the tips. I need to increases the subscriber base for my news update website. I hope your tips will help. BTW, how long it usually takes to reach 1k subscriber for a normal average blog?
