Six Apart Goes All Tumblr on You, Still Not Free Though

typepadWith the announcement of the new Pico microblogging theme Six Apart now also stepped in to the microblogging game and wants its part of the pie. They also announced new features to simplify microblogging on the TypePad platform:

  • “Post from anywhere” capabilities with email, iPhone, and TypePad bookmarklet
  • New simple, professionally-designed, stylish themes
  • “Post once, publish everywhere” with built-in support for Facebook, Twitter, and Friendfeed
  • Control of your own advertising, your domain, and your personal brand
  • All backed with support and training from TypePad One

These features might be new for Typepad users, I personally fail to see where they are new. Other than having ‘built-in plugins’ for the technically challenged people. Everything else, and much more, can be obtained freely via Tumblr and/or WordPress. For the minimum $4.95/month TypePad charges, I can host my blog on my own domain and have much more freedom.

  • So, immediately after pointing out that‐at least part of‐the reason for the “built-in plugins” is that the users are often less technically-inclined, you then go on to suggest that for the same amount of money(not true, by the way) they could handle their own domain registration and hosting.

Care to explain how it is that you seem to think those same people from the first part are going to be comfortable with DNS settings? Or the domain registration system that has managed to screw over people much more technically experienced than they? Or why you assume they even want their own domain at all?

  • Su, most hosting companies require none of these settings. You can easily find 1year hosting with Fantastico and domain inclusive for less than $50.

Why point out the fact that they might want an own domain? Because it’s one of the selling points Six Apart uses.
And ever since WordPress 2.8, with the built-in updater, built-in plugin installer and theme browser there should be no need for technical knowledge at all anymore.

  • Franky,

Thanks for the noting the release of the new microblogging themes and features on TypePad. We are happy to bring these features to our customers, who appreciate the ease of use and the built-in power of TypePad.

While I know you’re a big fan of WordPress.com and WordPress.org, it’s great that you cover all blogging platforms. I’d be happy to let you know more things coming down the pipe.

For example, we’ve also released an updated TypePad web app support for iPhone, Palm Pre and Android (http://everything.typepad.com/blog/2009/08/typepad-activity-for-iphone-pre-and-android-phones.html) and support for Facebook Connect (http://everything.typepad.com/blog/2009/08/happy-together-typepad-and-facebook-connect.html) in the last ten days.

It’s a great time to be a blogger with all of the resources — TypePad, Movable Type, WordPress.com, WordPress.org, Tumblr, Blogger, Vox and more — available.

    Best,
    Mark Simmons

  • Hi Mark,

Thanks for your comment. I will keep a closer eye on Six Apart in the future.

I have tried almost any platform and might at some point make an update to last year’s entry on BloggingPro because indeed it are great times with plenty of choice available. Personally I use WP but will probably be the first to switch when I consider another platform more appropriate. Actually, I have ran MTOS and even Chyrp for a while on my personal blog.
