How Things Change: Going from Fun to Pro

Filed as Guides with 3 comments

I’ve been very fortunate over the past three years or so to be able to make a living off of my blog. Though it has never been directly from the site itself, always from consulting and other services related to it, it is clear that my site has always played a critical role in my income.

However, the site didn’t start out that way. When I started Plagiarism Today I was just a guy passionate about a topic who wanted to write on it. When I first set up the site, it was meant as an experiment, not as a means of making my living. In fact, income was never part of the plan at all, just something that happened.

But while I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to earn a living from my site and am glad to have had the chances I have had, it is clear that things do change as one’s site goes from being a hobby to being a part of their income. Since this is an active goal for many bloggers, its important to make sure that one is ready for that before they begin to take their checks.

After all, many find that blogging may seem to be a great way to make a living, that is, until they do so and blogging becomes much more serious in nature. read more

Hostel company seeking 2010 Winter Olympics video blogger

Filed as News with 1 comment

We’ve seen a fair number of blogging competitions over the past couple of years, where one lucky entrant gets an all-expenses-paid trip somewhere to blog about an event or location.

The latest one to catch my eye is being run by Hosteling International Canada.

They’re looking for a video blogger to report from Vancouver during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games (12-28 February 2010).

To be in with a chance of winning, bloggers need to submit a one-minute video explaining why they would be the best person for the job. read more

Filed as News with 1 comment

Most of the bloggers I know are satisfied to get $10 for a 250-word post. So when I read that our government is poised to spend $5 million to help “spread democracy” throughout the Mideast and North Africa, I couldn’t help but wonder if a few loyal BlogHerald readers were in for a sizable payday! read more

Sunday Morning SEO: Long Tail Keyword Research With Google Analytics

Filed as Features with 8 comments

One of the things SEO specialists often talk about is the power of long tail keywords. Long tail keywords are the search terms with 3 or more words that don’t have high search volume. The shorter keywords have higher search volume but in aggregate, the long tail keywords provide the bulk of a site’s search traffic.

For example, you can have a Europe travel site that ranks well for europe travel but the majority of your traffic will come from terms like:

  • europe travel deals
  • europe travel guide
  • europe travel packages
  • europe travel books
  • cheap europe travel

blogpressvswpmt2 Did BlogPress Spank WordPress And Six Apart On The iPhone?

If it were not for the WordPress iPhone app’s ability to moderate comments, I would seriously consider deleting it right now.

BlogPress, an iPhone app by CoolLittle Things has recently updated their app which now supports direct image uploading to WordPress and Movabletype blogs, instead of uploading them to Picasa Web Albums like before. read more
