Facebook Beta Testing Face Recognition Software
Tagging people is a great way to keep your friends connected to your Facebook photos, unfortunately it can also be a tedious process, a process Facebook is hoping to easily streamline by implementing face detection software.
Testing of the new technology has begun today with a select group of users.
If you’re unfamiliar with the current system you must upload a photo, click on each persons face, tag that person and then move onto the next photo. Obviously going back and tagging large photo albums can be a tedious process.
To solve the tedium of face detection the new program now determines each face and says “Whose face is this?” at which point the user just types in the persons name. The technology being implemented is the same tech used in modern digital cameras.
If that isn’t enough innovation for you, Facebook is promising more photo products in the coming months.
I personally would love the option for Facebook to detect the faces of all my friends and then auto-tag photos that they are part of based off facial recognition points from their own profiles photos. Maybe that’s a bit too next Gen?
If you had your choice, what photo features would you ask Facebook to implement?
That would be really cool if it worked. It would save lots of people time when uploading photos.
Based on Facebook’s past record of disregarding user privacy, I feel creeped out by this. It might be a useful way to upload photos, but somebody has to pay for it. I fear that users will pay for this feature with ever more intrusive ads that exploit this technology.
Face recognition, I had never heard of that. I imagine what would happen if the technology does not work perfect. People will end up tagged on photos they are not on.
Hi,
I see that you talk about Face recognition software, but if I can help you with your research…
I just find one great book about Face recognition which inspire some future ideas by identifying potential research directions.
The book consists of 28 chapters, each focusing on a certain aspect of the problem. This book will serve as a handbook for students, researchers and practitioners in the area of automatic (computer) face recognition.
This is the link : http://www.intechopen.com/books/show/title/face_recognition Book is free to download of course.
Hope you will enjoy it.
