On a side note…on such a beautifully written, following above mentioned 3, 7, 11 & 12 points, I am the first one to comment.
So in my opinion, blogosphere has got saturated with people who just want to consume reading material without even leaving a trace that they ever visited your site. Also they have got a habit of consuming so much material that they don’t even have patience to leave a comment. They just Like (Facebook), Tweet or at the most Digg it.
There are so many similar venues they can share your stuff and then talk about it at those venues, that there is actually very less chances that someone will come to leave a comment. (Unless the discussion started on the blog.)
Finally, if someone wants to make a point and want writer’s attention, then they will make sure to leave a comment where they get attention.

Very nice points. However we shouldn’t forget that a huge majority of readers on the Internet are kinda passive and tend not to comment even if they find the post interesting.
I had a couple of fairly successful posts lately, with some hundreds readers in few hours, a very practical post in my niche of market about an opensource project we released. It got retweeted a lot, but no one commented the post itself. Does it mean the project or post sucked? And if so, why so many people retweeted it and liked it in Twitter discussions? It really is a complicated matter.
The points you describe are awesome to attract that % of users that do comment. In fact I was attracted to this post because you offered a practical solution from the headline of it, you put a “number”, and you stimulated my curiosity.

Gabriele has a good point about MOST readers staying in the shadows when it comes to commenting and engaging in general. It’s still an uncomfortable place for many. Readers are still more likely to “share” the article rather than comment.

Number of tweets , diggsm share on facebook you get should be counted as kind of comments only, because feedback is feedback irrespective of how you get it. And yes, readers now have lot of choices and too less time to leave a comment.

Just wondering, what can’t fit into any of these types? It seems like it is very easy to write a post that falls into one of these 18 types but not always get results that are expected. Do you think that there’s some form of ranking needed to sort these 18 types? Or if what kind of blogs should adopt what specific kinds of posts to get comments?

I’m with Elisa on this one – most posts can fall under one of these categories you mention and I’m not convinced following these guidelines will suddenly lead to dozens of new comments. Personally there are a few reasons I’ll choose to comment on a blog post:
* The blogger has said something I agree or disagree with strongly
* I want to congratulate someone on a new job/baby/engagement/personal success
* Something is hilarious and I want to add my own experience
* Something is so amazing I couldn’t possibly leave the website without letting the blogger know how amazing they are but am too lazy to write an email (There is a fine line. Remember that.)
* There’s some form of list, usually in advice-form, where I have something to contribute

The comments issue is something I have always struggled with. Some of the tips you wrote about seemed pretty intuitive (i.e. ask readers questions, use humour, express strong opinions) but others I would have never thought of (promote yourself posts).

The other thing to keep in mind is quite a few readers don’t want to leave bad comments. I usually comment when I feel I can add to the conversation.
I’ve been trying to get into the habit of leaving more comments on the blogs I read. I have no problem sharing or tweeting about a post I like. I just hate leaving redundant or unhelpful comments. I know quite a few people who feel the same way.

I just have to leave a thank-you here. I read this post shortly after it went up, and really used it as a guidebook for how to grow my comments. They were pretty anemic back then — 20 comments on one post would have been amazing in those days. This week, one of my posts got nearly 200 comments (it was category #1 — I gave away 50 free blog reviews), and I really owe it all to this post.
I still refer my readers to this post frequently. I work a lot with new bloggers who’re wondering why it’s not all clicking for them and why nobody comments. It’s still the best reference I know for how to drive more comments to your blog!
