Can Melody Save Movable Type?

Right now Say Media (who now officially owns Movable Type and Typepad) is in the middle of a firestorm after the President (Troy Young) insulted every small blogger utilizing their services with this statement.

Say Media expects to lose some subscribers to the Six Apart blogging platform. Its main focus, Young said, is in those that hope to build media businesses, rather than regular people who write a blog for fun.

“The kinds of people we want to work with are emerging media personalities,” he said. (AdWeek)

While the company attempts to pacify the rage and prevent many users from defecting to rival platforms, Say Media may find their ultimate hope in an emerging platform that shares Movable Type’s DNA (if not a passion for the platform as well).

So exciting to see Melody picking up steam again. The community is gearing up for the first official release. Can’t wait! (via @OpenMelody)

For those of you have no idea what Melody is, it basically is “a fork” of Movable Type (version 4.34 to be specific) that was created by passionate MT fans who desire to see the platform thrive the way WordPress has in recent years.

While Melody has no intention of displacing Movable Type as a commercial platform, the (soon to be) not-for-profit entity is attempting to revive the platform in order to help breathe some new life into MT (beyond the corporate and geek world that is).

While Melody does have a lot of promise, only time will reveal whether they will be able to help Say Media challenge Automattic’s WordPress empire (the latter who is now intent on conquering the mobile verse).

Either way it’s good to see a close cousin to Movable Type emerging from the ashes of the latter, as it will help ensure the survival of the platform if (worst case scenario) Say Media goes under.
