When I think of the popularity of Twitter I think of people walking around New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago, posting about their day and sharing vacation photos with friends. Yet many social users may be surprised to learn that the top tweeting city isn’t in the United States.
Forbes contributor Victor Lipman recently analysts millions of tweets to determine Twitter’s global usage patterns and what he learned was that Jakarta, Indonesia Twitter users are actually the most active on the social platform.
Behind Jakarta was New York City, Tokyo, London, and Sao Paulo. Also making the cut were Paris, Los Angeles, and Bandung, Indonesia.
Indonesia is not the top country in terms of Twitter use but given that Bandung and Jakarta only have 13 million residents between both of them it’s still an impressive feat.
While the United States has far more Twitter users, they simply don’t tweet as much as residents in Jakarta.
In his study Lipman also found that 27 percent of all Twitter users are based in the United States, although that number is falling. The study also revealed that Arabic is the 6th most tweeted language and that the company’s own home city of San Francisco isn’t even in the top 20 most active Twitter cities.
