One of my favorite books is Robert Green’s 48 Laws of Power. The 5th Law says, “So Much Depends on Reputation – Guard it with your Life.” I keep wondering how much that quote has to do with what we do online.

It takes years of effort and hard work, whether you’re a blogger or a corporation, to build a reputation online. However, it only takes an angry tweet, a rude email or a drunken Facebook status update to destroy your reputation.

1. Own Your Google Search Results

2. Control Your Reviews Online

According to a Brand.com review, feedback online can make or break your online presence. In a recent interview with Brand.com’s CEO, Mike Zammuto, I asked him what he thinks Yelp means to businesses. According to Mike, Yelp is a threat to all businesses.

Since little is done to verify the accuracy of reviews on Yelp, disgruntled employees or unhappy customers can post anything about your business on Yelp, and users who use the service will see it and believe it is true.

If you think Yelp isn’t that important and should be ignored, think again. A recent report revealed that Yelp now gets around 100 million monthly visitors and that it is responsible for 10 billion dollars in e-commerce sales every month.

The solution isn’t to start posting your own positive reviews on Yelp. Instead, Mike suggests bringing the reviews to your own websites. The more reviews that are posted on your website, the higher your rankings climb. You don’t want to help Yelp to outrank your site in the search engines.

3. Start Blogging

As noted in the Brand.com review, blogging is of critical importance. When I asked Mike what he thinks about blogging, be believes it is “critical.”

Blogging helps you to get your own version of the story out. A blog that is authoritative will also make it easy for content you publish to rank well.

It is important to have your own outlets that allow people to listen to your story. Whenever trouble is brewing, you can keep your fans updated and let them know about the state of things.

4. Make Social Media a Priority

Take a look at the top search engine results for most terms, especially the name of a particular person, and you will see that results are dominated by social profiles.

Brand.com recently created Completed.com , a social site that allows you to showcase your achievements and experiences. They strongly believe that having quality social media profiles, on which you constantly interact, will go a long way in helping your brand.

5. Start Guest Blogging

Besides paying attention to blogging, recommends Brand.com, review the importance of guest blogging as well. Look for key blogs in your niche that accept guest posts, and contribute something valuable to these blogs with a link back to your site.

Guest blogging is one of the top marketing and SEO strategy today, and it isn’t a surprise to see that it is recommended as a way to protect your brand. Guest blogging on the right blog can also help you position yourself, and your brand, as an authority in your niche.

6. Call the Experts

When things get out of hand and nothing you do seems to be helping, advises Brand.com, review the importance of hiring reputation management experts to help you clean up your online profile. Sometimes it’s best to let the experts do their job.
