We’re halfway through the year, and a lot of things have happened in the tech, digital, marketing, and social media scenes. The landscape is in a constant state of flux, with brilliant minds from all over the world contributing to its evolution.
One thing that every professional in these niches has to prioritize is professional improvement, and that may include learning on one’s own by reading, networking online or via conferences, among other things. That is why we decided to put together a list of tech, digital, and social media conferences you can still look forward to this year.
While some are pretty near (in terms of date), others are still some months away, so you can plan your trip – choose cheap flights via comparison sites, find an affordable hotel via sites such as Uyora, and of course, plan other touristy stuff you can do when not participating in a session. read more

The voice of the online publisher has grown over the years to be well respected for disseminating information as well as a tool for launching businesses and opening doors for ordinary people to making a decent living and achieve their dreams online. Marketing today is not quite as simple as it was in past years and with over 300 Million blogs in existence the competition is quite fierce.
However, one thing I have noticed is that not many bloggers are extraordinary in their efforts to making their blog a success. Lots of mediocrity and sub par performances are abundant as most don’t truly respect the art and are just not hungry enough to seek to be better day-in day-out. Being better requires hard work, more so than you’d put into your 9-5 job. read more

Working online is an exciting thing, but there is always a higher degree of uncertainty, especially when it comes to finances. Of course, it depends on the exact nature of what you do online, but if you are a freelance writer working for clients, there are periods when there is no client work at all. If you have your own online publication, and you depend on advertisers and Adsense for revenue, then you are at the mercy of Google updates – among other things.
The stark truth is that
winter is coming lean periods do come, and all you can do is to prepare yourself so that you can make it through. Some times may be tougher than others, but if you are prepared, then you’ll survive.

Brainstorming the right domain name for your business idea, product, service or blog requires a lot of imagination, strategy, originality, research and good linguistic design practices. Purchasing your domain name is quite similar to buying a piece of real estate as it truly is an investment that can help you make millions from your idea and create the sticky effect every marketer is aiming for.
Essentially, it’s not a decision that should be quick and impulsive. Do your research, take the time to think about the name and the factors discussed below. Whois.domaintools.com is a very useful website that provides information on whether a domain is available for registration or not or you could check the registry through any web hosting provider. read more

Habits are formed, whether good or bad; and the sensible person will accept what bad habits he has formed. More so, he will go one step further and do something to rectify the situation.
When it comes to publishing online, bad habits are not uncommon. The question is whether or not you, the writer, have realized that you have some of those bad habits and if you are willing to get rid of them.

Editor’s note: This post was written by Karol K., a freelance blogger and writer. He is also founder of newInternetOrder.com. If you’d like to get in touch, he’s also on Twitter: @carlosinho.
When I first started blogging, I had the impression that it can all be done “in my spare time.” It was an impression that blogging doesn’t take that much effort on a day-to-day basis and that almost anyone can build a career during the afternoon coffee break.
Well, that wasn’t accurate. At all.
But in my defense, it’s hard to blame me. After all, the web is chock full of blogging advice preaching the part-time-blogging gospel and trying to sell you on yet another e-book on how to pull it off.
Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. read more

Your site is not that big that it would attract the attention of hackers, is it? That’s what some people think, and thus they don’t spend all that much time putting measures in place to ensure that their website is safe and secure.
But surely you’ve heard of that massive DDoS attack on almost 200,000 WordPress sites not so long ago? For all you know, you could have been one of the targets. These days, hackers don’t always target just the big sites. Every website is at risk.
Why is website security important?
IT expert Neeraj Tewari says it clearly: “Many people use their blog to communicate with friends or family, or for work purposes. If your blog is compromised, it puts those critical relationships at risk. Your blog or blog profile may contain important personal or identifying information. If your blog is vulnerable, so is this info.” read more

Pageviews are no longer king when it comes to measuring website and content performance—if they ever truly were a useful metric at all. More and more advertisers, marketers, and publishers have begun to realize that without actual conversion, views mean very little when it comes to monetizing content. There may have been a time when the availability of content was less ubiquitous and a certain number of views could be counted on to coincide with conversions—but that ship has, for the most part, sailed.
Today, those who are working with content monetization, online sales, and online publishing of all types are aware of the fact that marketing must be done in a careful, calculated manner in order to capture the attention of today’s information inundated consumer base. This might sound as if it goes without saying, but it needs to be said because so many advertisers are still clinging to traditional display ads, which simply aren’t effective. Some estimates claim that the average internet user is served 1,700 banner ads on a monthly basis. How many banner ads do you, the reader, remember seeing over the past month? How many of those brand names do you remember? read more

Practically everyone is using social media today, and for many bloggers and businesses, this medium has proven to be one of the most powerful platforms for spreading ideas, raising awareness, discovering new customers and generating sales. Social media is here to stay as it continues to seamlessly provide a doorway to great content while giving everyone a chance for their voice to be heard.
The viral potential and reach of social networks is attractive for any marketer, knowing well that the perfectly placed article can lead to a flood of visitors as content is shared instantly and in real time across millions of people. Going viral is the goal. Unfortunately, virality is rare for most and publishing great content that ends up on popular social media news sites isn’t a certain formula for success without any means of it being discovered. read more
