Facebook Testing Ranked Comments, Hopes To Improve Engagement

Facebook Ranking AlgorithmFacebook is currently testing a new form of comment ranking for brand and subscriber pages. The company’s new algorithm will place more emphasis on comments that are engaging more users, allowing for a better user experience across the board.

As comments receive more interaction they move further up the comment thread, ensuring that those engaging comments are viewed by the largest group of people possible.

Comments are ranked based on a number of factors that include Likes, responses and hides.

The new platform also allows page administrators to reply directly to comments thanks to a newly added “reply” button. read more

Facebook Testing Sound Notifications

Facebook PingFacebook wants users to know exactly when they receive a private message, someone writes on their Timeline, etc. For that reason the social network is testing new sound notifications.

The new alert sends out a ping sound when someone interacts with your Facebook account, much like the noise your phone sends when a text message is received.

A representative for Facebook tells Mashable:

We are currently testing a sound with notifications.Its only testing with a small percentage of people and it can be controlled from the Account Settings page. read more

Barack Obama Celebration Photo Becomes ‘Most Liked’ In Facebook History, Also Sets Twitter Record

Obama PhotoPresident Barack Obama celebrated his victory on Tuesday night by sharing a photograph on his Facebook page. That photo which features the President in a warm embrace with First Lady Michelle Obama has quickly become the “most liked” photograph in the history of Facebook.

Under his photo was the simple caption “four more years.”

The Facebook pageFacebook + Journalistsrevealed the new record at approximately 3 a.m. ET. According to the group:

Facebook Adds Photo Filters To iOS Mobile App

Facebook Photo FiltersThe battle of the mobile photo filter apps is under way! Yesterday it was revealed that Twitter was secretly working on an Instagram competitor and now Facebook has launched a filter program of its own.

Fresh off the heels of its Instagram acquisition the world’s largest social media network has delivered photo filters for Facebook mobile users.

The new iOS update adds Instagram-style filters to Facebook photos as users choose to use them. Pictures uploaded to an Apple-powered device are automatically eligible to use the filters.

To use the program users simple choose a photo to upload and then tap the wand icon. 13 different filters are include, among them are:contrast, cool, coffee, neon, b&w. and more. read more

Anonymous Might Attack Facebook Today, Plans To Protest Zynga Layoffs

Anonymous going after FacebookHacktivist group Anonymous is rumored to be preparing for a Monday attack on social network Facebook. The groups attack will coincide with Guy Fawkes Day and is meant to hurt the network over its support for social gaming platform Zynga.

Zynga recently began laying off more than 1,000 workers in an effort to cut down on mounting losses. While not directly involved in Zynga’s business transactions Facebook does derive a good but decreasing chunk of its revenues from Zynga games.

According to Anonymous the social gaming platform should be using its considerable cash reserves to pay employees during tough times. read more

Facebook Ended Up Paying Less Than $750 Million For Instagram

InstagramMark Zuckerberg and company originally agreed to pay $1 billion for social photo sharing company Instagram but ended up paying far less.

Purchased in April the social world was abuzz with news that Zuckerberg purchased the company without first talking to his board of directors.

In a quarterly investment report that was filed on Wednesdaywith the Securities and Exchange Commission Facebook added 11 million shares to its total. Those new shares are valued at $194 million and were given to Instagram employees at the close of the September deal. read more

Facebook App ‘Vote With Friends’ Advocated Voting With A Social Twist

A new Facebook app calledVote With Friendshas just been released and its sole purpose is to create voting advocacy among Facebook users and the friends they influence.

The app was created by internet advocacy groupFight For the Futureand it allows users to check whether or not their friends on Facebook are registered to vote or whether they have pledge to register. The program also tells users if their friends actually went and voted on election day.

According to Mashable:

“The idea? Take Facebooks Poke concept, and use it to bring a little positive peer pressure into democratic participation”

Tiffiniy Cheng, co-founder and co-director of Fight for the Future says of theVote With Friendsapp:

We think [voting] is essential to what makes a vibrant democracy. Especially in the United States, were seeing that what your fiends are asking you to do actually affects whether or not you go vote. If thats a part of voting in America, we should absolutely have the ability to do that online. read more

Facebook Announces New Mobile Security Initiative

Facebook SecurityFacebook is increasing its focus on mobile security, promising to work towards a more secure platform that protects users from malicious URLs, scams and other threats.

Starting today users can download virus scan software from the likes ofvast!, AVG, Avira, Kaspersky, Panda, Total Defens and Webroot. Those programs add to the company’s computer downloads which includes software fromMicrosoft, McAfee, Norton, TrendMicro and Sophos.

In anofficial blog postFacebook writes:

As with our existing partners, these seven companies will help protect Facebooks community of over a billion users by improving our URL blacklist system.This system scans trillions of clicks per day, and before each click, the system consults the databases of all our AV Marketplace partners to make sure the website you are about to visit is safe.

Facebook launched its security initiative six months ago with the hopes of lessening the reach of virus and malware programs being discovered on its network. Among the company’s initiatives is the AV Marketplace, a system that allows users to download a six-month license for the virus scan program of their choice and at no cost. read more

Facebook Rolling Out ‘Want’ Feature For Photos, Hopes To Capture Internet Purchases

Facebook Want ButtonIf you have “liked” an item on the internet up until this point you could share it with your friends just like you would posts, likes, photos and comments, but the “transaction” so to speak ended there. That all changed on Monday when the company began rolling out ‘collect’ and ‘want’ options for photos.

Fans of a product can now list products they want and even buy products that are within a collection they find on a friends account.

Facebook is not attempting to become an online retailer, instead it will send customers directly to the online stores e-commerce page. read more
