Glenda’s powerful presentation wasn’t the typical dry stuff of web accessibility. Dry? Boring? That’s not possible with Glenda around. She has a wicked sense of humor and used it in her PowerPoint presentation, accompanied by her voice program, Kate, which read her presentation out loud. I’ve never laughed so hard over such a serious subject as web accessibility.
Glenda has cerebral palsy. It restricts her movement and speech but it doesn’t impact her intelligence, though many have labeled her otherwise in the past. In her book, I’ll Do It Myself, she shared the trials and tribulations as well as the challenges of being a highly intellectual woman trapped in a body that just can’t keep up. The excellent Liz Strauss is making SOBCon happening again in 2009. If previous years are anything to go by, this year will feature big names and lots of interesting discussions, so it’ll be a big event for the blogosphere for sure.
I caught up with Liz for a quick email interview. This is what she had to say.
First of all, give us the details! When, where, why is SOBCon09?
SOBCon09 is May 1, 2, 3, 2009 in Chicago. Hope you’re coming! It’s going to be so cool this year! You can find a complete list of speakers at sobevent.com/details/. But the difference is that we’ve extended it by a day. Friday starts with how-to that will go through everything about business online from building trust economies and creative communites to the essentials of business and multimedia social network enteriprise online.
Saturday is our signature Models and Masterminds format in which speakers offer actionable up to the minute content to attended in mastermind teams. The mastermind teams get huge chunks of time to apply what the speakers have just said to their own blogs or businesses. You can’t work together at a small conference table with five people without developing deep networking relationships that go far beyond exchanging business cards.
Sunday is what I’m most looking forward to. We’re offering sponsors a small window to bring a product or problem to the attendee audience to work on. Say, Company A has a new BluRay laptop they want to offer to Mommy Bloggers. Company A will get a short time to present that problem. Then then of attendees will work on how they would build a social media plan to offer that product to the market most efficiently. Can’t wait to see the ideas fly.

Designated by the governor of Hawaii, there is a week of tech events all over Honolulu, ending with PodCamp/WordCamp Hawaii.
The first event, Mactoberfest, was a great success with a photography and computer tech swap meet and a day of speakers covering web technologies and applications. It began with myself, Lorelle VanFossen, speaking about how WordPress changes lives, followed by Lorenz Sell of iLovePhotos, John Dalton of Studio Artist, and a great panel discussing the past and the future of web technology, blogging, and journalism. While most of the exhibitors at Blog World Expo were there to promote their products and services to the mass of bloggers in attendance, Tom and Bruce were there for a different reason. They were there to learn.
So many events and conferences bring together a lot of people with a marketing agenda. They want to sell products and services and make money. Tom and Bruce of Cart-Away Concrete showed up at this blogging conference with their portable cement mixer and said, “We don’t have anything for you to buy. We came here to learn.”
That’s right. They just came to learn from everyone who walked through the Las Vegas Convention Center Exhibition Hall over the course of the three day event. They aren’t bloggers, they aren’t web hosts, they aren’t marketers, or guys with cool blog gadgets. They are construction experts in equipment and concrete. How many bloggers have a huge commercial construction project underway and would need them? Hmmm?
No, they were there to learn. They could hire someone to teach them what to do and set up their blogs and social media services to promote their franchise and contractor business, but that’s not what they wanted. They wanted to learn from everyone in this new online social media business.
