We saw this coming, especially with the feature we did on the new b5media back in February. Mashing lots of blogs together and moving to WordPress MU, it all smelled forum integration with bbPress, and Facebook-ish social networking with BuddyPress from the start. And now they’re rolling it out, first on Splendicity and Blisstree, but the rest of the roster will get the community treatment too.
All of our bloggers will certainly play a key role in this. There are very few leaders in any given community; it is one of those miniscule percentages of total users, in the 1% range. We have a clear advantage because our bloggers are already our community leaders. [...] Most importantly, it allows bloggers to interact with their readers outside of the author/commentor relationship and allow readers to start discussions about their favourite topics as well.

One of the good things with having your stats open in public, like Gawker Media has (using Sitemeter by the way), is that you can get others reporting on how much you grow. Like Simon Owens, who blogs at Bloggasm, and has been analyzing the stats, finding that the Gawker Media network (BloodCopy not included, of course!) increased by 17% during the first five months of 2009.
For the first five months of ‘09 the blogs showed a combined 1.4 billion page views, compared to 1.19 billion in the last five months of ‘09 — a jump of over 200 million.
To conduct this survey I compiled page view data from Gawker Media’s Sitemeter stats from each of the blogs. The number of page views does not represent the number of unique visitors to a site, but rather the number of times a page was loaded.

I can’t tell if it is good or bad, I just know that I’m not the target audience here…

The always aggressive Envato blog network is expanding yet again. This time it is all about 3D graphics and CG art, spearheaded by none other than Kaleb Aylsworth. No, I hadn’t heard of him either, but he’s working at Digital Extremes and doing Bioshock 2 multiplayer stuff, which makes him something of a hero in my book.
We’ll be publishing a combination of step-by-step written tutorials and screencasts, with preview images and videos so you can see the final result before you invest time in it. At Cgtuts+ we’ll be pioneering the concept of multi-day tutorials, allowing us to produce detailed and in-depth end results without over-complicating the process.
The GigaOm network is growing, and the latest addition is a subscription service. That might make some of you shake your heads and wonder what’s up with the WSJ treatment, but although one could compare the two, it really isn’t the same thing. GigaOm Pro, which is the $79/year subscription service’s name, offers reports and analysis that competes with market research firms if anything. They’re starting out with 17 of them, and spreads their content across four verticals: Green IT, Infrastructure, the Connected Consumer, and Mobile. These in turn have sub-sections so that you can find what you want and need.
But even as market research analysts adapt to the new models, we at GigaOM believe there is room in the market for a new way to experience informed opinion, one that combines our best asset — our large and enthusiastic community of smart readers — with technology and market experts in an approachable and interactive format.
If a good exclusive used to provide 10 times the traffic of a standard regurgitated blog post, now it garners a hundred times as much. That should be reassuring to people. The content market is finding its new balance. Original reporting will be rewarded.

Who Ate All The Pies stopped being updated in September last year, but now Ollie Irish has retaken his role as editor-in-chief, with Anorak handling content production but (at present) with the blog still very clearly branded as Shiny Media’s. Details of the deal aren’t known (and probably won’t be made public) but I’d imagine some sort of revenue sharing and pay-per-post deal is in place to keep both the writers and companies happy. read more

Even the folks over at Envato says that it makes sense, which tells me that they’ve really just been looking for the right editor to run this Flash tutorial site in the Tuts part of the ever growing Envato network. Apparently Ian Yates is the right man for the job, so check out Flashtuts if you’re into Flash.
DogTime Media, a vertical media community in the pet market reaching over 9.6 million unique visitors a month, revealed that its DogTime Blog Network has grown to include 320 pet bloggers. The aggregated reach of these bloggers is seen at 1.2 million unique visitors.
Bloggers are joining the DogTime Blog Network to benefit from the additional traffic, revenue and content tools that are available to them via DogTime Media. These tools include a Media Center that delivers entertaining, informative and engaging videos, photos and articles, and is easily integrated into their blogs. Also popular is DogTime’s Blog Widget that allows bloggers to share traffic with one another.
“Our blogger community has more than doubled since we launched it in October,” said Trevor Wright, CEO of DogTime Media. “When combined with our unique set of content distribution and user engagement tools that are already deployed across our community of more than 250 pet publisher sites we are in the unique position to support our advertiser’s marketing objectives throughout the entire consumer purchase cycle.”
The WPCandy Network is growing, with the most recent addition of a WordPress design gallery called WPInspiration. At first glance it looks like a typical CSS gallery site, but featuring WordPress powered instead of just CSS based once, but it seems as if the folks behind it will be taking it a step furter:
Unlike a lot of other galleries, each site will feature a short, personal review from Mike or Dan. We’ll note some things about the site, things we don’t like, and ways it might be able to be improved. Reviews won’t go very in-depth but will be more than sticking a URL and a thumbnail in our database. We haven’t gone back and reviewed every site in our database, only the 10 most recent ones.
