ThemeForest GPLs All WordPress Themes

Envato’s web template marketplace ThemeForest is changing its WordPress theme licenses. As of August 4th, all WordPress themes will be sold in two licenses: GPL and Standard License. The latter only applies to CSS, JavaScripts and images, not the actual WordPress themes files. Anyone not OK with this should remove their items prior to August 4th.

Why do they do this? In their own words:

1: Technically, we have to. :)
2: It’s important to respect the spirit of WordPress. This is the way it was intended.

Most resellers of premium (commercial) WordPress themes have gone this route, if nothing else but to be included on the wordpress.org featured page is my guess. You might want to refer to our guide to the GPL license for more. You can purchase ThemeForest themes here.

Envato to Launch VideoHive

Envato continues to expand its network. This time it’s another marketplace that is due to launch soon, before the year is over according to Collis Ta’eed in a blog post on the VideoHive blog. This time around, it is a marketplace for video clips, starting with 600 items previously found in the FlashDen video section.

On a different note, Envato also announced that ThemeForest, another marketplace, will start to carry Photoshop PSD designs, for those of you who are more inclined to code your own site rather than buy a WordPress theme. The PSD files will cost $6-10 and are promoted with a special web design week over at PSDTUTS. Nice playing the blog network card, Collis!

ThemeForest Launches, Another Premium Template Marketplace

Another marketplace for site templates, WordPress themes, and whatnot launched today. ThemeForest is the latest site to roll out in the Envato (formerly Eden.cc) network, which contains sites like PSDTuts and Flash template marketplace FlashDen. Collis Ta’eed’s got a launch post up on Nettuts, another Envato site, and he also announces a launch competition in the ThemeForest blog.

Like all Envato sites, ThemeForest sports a good design, and the platform is known to work since it shares its backbone with FlashDen and AudioJungle. It’s a bit scarce for now though, with 53 site templates, 13 WordPress themes, and 3 Joomla themes as I’m writing this. That will surely change, however, as designers start offering their work through the marketplace. Revenue share rates can be found here. Stay tuned for an interview with Collis Ta’eed over at BloggerTalks tomorrow.
