100 blogs in 100 days, day 3: Elliot Back

Day 3 of 100 blogs in 100 days comes from Elliot Back.
Blog: Elliot Back
About: “I’m a Computer Science student at Cornell University, so my blog revolves mostly around the tech world, with a little bit of fun and photography sprinkled in. It’s also my testbed for new designs and layouts, and hosts a few different popular WordPress plugins that I work on from time to time. Why read? Because there’s always a flamewar going on somewhere… if its kids screaming over race issues on the GTA sex thread, or people mad because I forward spreadIE to a special pro-internet-explorer category of my blog.”

So drop by and check out Elliot Back and leave your comments here.

  • I’ve promised myself I wont comment on the entries but…well, its really hard to not want to so a little note: what I particularly like about Elliot’s blog is the alphabetical index at the top, what can I say, the design is nice and clean but that indexing just struck me right away, I can honestly say its something I’ve never seen before on a blog anywhere.

  • Turns out Eillot has 9 blog sites and “Me Personally” blog (the one linked here) is a very well established one. It’s ranked as one of the top 6000 blogs in the world.

I really like the color and page layout. But I did lose my way around the site since there are so many pages and areas to go. I knew I saw the WordPress plug-in page, but couldn’t find it anymore a few minutes later.

Lots and lots of goodies on that site…

  • Really nice blog with some great touches. Like Duncan, I first noticed alphabetical index at the top. Eliot, is there a plugin for that?
The only thing I don’t like is the use of a standard WP template that a lot of people are using for their blogs.

  • Hmmm… the alphabet index was hacked into the WP-core, but there’s no reason a plugin couldn’t be written … in theory. I’m not quite sure what that would require, though. To get what I have, you just need to edit classes.php in the appropriate areas to add in the SQL search limiter, and then in wp-blog-header.php, add your new “letter” variable to the wpvarstoreset array. There’s a lot of hacking going on my blog, but I think it serves me well.

Thanks Duncan, for the post, and Yuna for the flattery! Miha, I can send you my files if you email me ;)

  • I’m very impressed (and intimidated–LOL) by this blog. Being a non-techie, some of the entries are over my head, but I can see a lot of tips can be gleaned from the archives, which I fully intend to “plunder.”

I’m chiming in re: the alphabetical listing–also love the Elliot Back network concept.

Speaking of being techie challenged–this is highly mortifying, but I don’t have a POP mail account set up, so I can’t access the e-mail address needed to throw my hat in the ring for the 100 Blogs in 100 Days extravaganza. Could someone within the sound of my voice kindly pass on the address? Here’s mine (hope it’s ok to list it here):

    Many thanks.

  • Excellent blog Elliot. I have first seen it a while back and I too, like Duncan has said, was won on that alphabetical list on the top. I have never seen that before and it made me click right away into all of your content and is an excellent way to find posts. Great job on that.

Keep up the great work with your blog!
