Blog Writing with Keyword Map Searches

Earlier this week, I introduced you to the search engine, with tips on how it can be used to brainstorm and research blog content. Today, I want to showcase the , a visual keyword map search engine.

KWMap is different as it graphically charts out relationships to your search term or phrase. It’s invaluable for exploring those relationships for brainstorming and research, giving you a new perspective on your search.

I typed in “blogging” to the search form and the keyword search results displayed a large X shape with the related keywords moving out from the center search term: blogging.

Moving out up and down from the keyword search term “blogging”, the list included:
KWMap blogging search term visual chart

  • manchester united blogging base
  • christian blogging
  • kinky blogging
  • spanking blogging
  • sex blogging
  • gay blogging
  • weblogs
  • journal
  • blogger
  • blog
  • blogging
  • weblog
  • blogs
  • diary
  • uk blogging
  • free blogging
  • blogging freak
  • music
  • web log

Consider this list, starting in the center of the list. The words most closely related to “blogging” are synonyms: blog, blogger, weblog, blogs, journal, weblogs, and diary. This makes total sense. Not everyone calls their blog a “blog” but uses the word most appropriate to describe their type of blog. Corporate bloggers tend to use weblog, the original term that become blog. Personal bloggers often refer to their blogs as diaries or journals. If you are researching personal blogging, then you would most likely click on diary or journal to be directed to those types of blogs.

Click on diary and you are taken to a new list:

  • dear diary
  • web diary
  • online diary
  • travel diary
  • wedding diary
  • personal diary
  • event diary
  • digital diary
  • music
  • diary
  • diaries
  • weblog
  • journal
  • diary
  • blog
  • writing
  • blogger
  • personal
  • poetry

All these cover different types and aspects of personal blogging. If you are researching information on personal bloggers covering poetry or travel blogs, this process of keyword digging would help point you in the right direction.

KWMap alphabetical listing of related keyword termsScroll down the page and you will see an alphabetical listing of all the related keywords to “diary” and you’ll find even more descriptions that define a personal blog.

Going back to blogging, the list includes different types of blogging, moving from the most popular outward to the smaller search result numbers. Among the graphic and alphabetical list are found:

  • christian blogging
  • free blogging
  • gay blogging
  • kinky blogging
  • manchester united blogging base
  • opinions
  • photography
  • sex blogging
  • spanking blogging
  • uk blogging
  • writing

These are the most popular types of blogging as determined by KWMap’s search results, which I’ve alphabetized so they are not in popular order. I knew that Christian, gay, writing, sports, and UK blogs were popular, but “kinky” and “spanking” blogs? Thord Daniel Hedengren recently asked Are you scared of sex?, discussing some popular sex blogs and asking why there aren’t more awards for sex blogs, especially since their traffic exceeds some of the most popular non-sex blogs and sites out there:

No matter if you like to read blogs about sex or not, it’s hard to not count them when it’s time for giving out awards. I mean, Fleshbot is the perfect example, the only Gawker blog that’s got more readers is Gizmodo (and that’s gadget porn…), no one else is even close to Fleshbot’s traffic.

Sex sells. Whether you like it or not.

So why not a kinky or spanking blog genre, a subset of sex blogs?

Already, KWMap is teaching us much about blogging that we probably didn’t know, opening up potential article ideas.

KWMap does not have a web crawler that crawls the web indexing sites or blogs. It is solely based upon site submissions by the public. When you get down to a search keyword for which there are no more related terms, it will take you directly to the site. Which opens the door to abuse. One such link took me to a porn site, not related to the keyword at all.

Still, if bloggers used this more and entered their blog’s URL, description and keywords directly related to search terms, this could be a fun and invaluable way of brainstorming and researching blog content.

Have you found any interesting and unusual search engines or directories to help you with your blog writing and publishing?

  • I had the same experience as you. I heard about this new keyword research tool and so I went to try it out.

I guess it was just the because of the words used in the niche I was researching (which has absolutely nothing do to with porn or anything illegal in any way!!)… i put in the key phrase and all I saw was a page pop up full of porn and child porn I believe.

It kind of freaked me out. I thought maybe it was just the phrase I had used so I tried other key phrases for my niche and every one brought me to a different pornographic page.

So… I’m just letting people know be very careful using this thing! I will never use it again. It’s crazy really how they can do things like this. I mean you can find yourself on a site that is very bad at the best and may well be illegal at the worst… and yet you actually never had that in your mind at all. Crazy stuff!!
