Questions about Advertising and Your Blog?

One of the many things I am still learning, but am completely fascinated in is advertising on the web. I have tried Google AdSense, just like pretty much every blogger, but did you know there are thousands of companies devoted to providing websites with advertising? Be they affiliate marketing sites, pay per click or payment per thousand impressions, there are many different options out there for bloggers to take advantages of.

If you have questions about advertising on your blog, leave a comment here and I will do my best to get them answered. Splashpress Media has dozens of experts in advertising and affiliate programs, and of course anything I can help with, I will definitely take the time to do so.

Lastly, I plan on doing a video questions and answers session which won’t be focused on advertising, but such questions would definitely be welcome. I am looking at doing the first live video Q&A session this Saturday at 8pm EST on Ustream.tv. Let me know if you are planning on stopping by, or what days and times would work best for you.

  • Hi David.

Besides AdSense, what affiliate program do you indicate to Brasilian bloggers, regarding to advertises in portuguese and a simple payment procedure?

    Thanks

  • Raphael – I can’t really speak to certain international areas, as I know most companies want visitors from the USA, Canada, UK, and Asia.

You could try the bigger names like Azoogle, Pepperjam Network, Commission Junction, but again, I think your location is going to be difficult to work around. What type of products are you looking to work with? That might help fine tune your opportunities and choices.

Also, for a simple payment, most companies can use Paypal, so if you haven’t signed up for an account with them, I’d highly recommend it. Almost everything I do goes through paypal, and as such, it makes it easy to track my online earnings and expenses.

David – Good article, but its very general and very broad. I am hoping to help with very specific questions here. :)

  • A question? You can start a series on the subject. There is so much posted about this, but it is still terra incognita for many of us.

  • I’ll bite. I currently have Google Adsense and Amazon affiliates. What other ad networks would you recommend – but specifically ones that wouldn’t impact PageRank (meaning TextLinkAds and PayPerPost are out)?

  • I have Google Adsense, Amazon Affilliate, eBay Afilliate and zZounds ads on my site. The only one making any real money is the Amazon Affiliate stuff. I can understand the others not performing except for Google AdSense… considering everyone uses it I feel like maybe I am doing something wrong here… take a look: http://www.wiretotheear.com/ Why aren’t my Google AdSense ads making any real money? Thanks for any advice. My blog was not set up to make money but I find the advertising side interesting and wanted to try it out.

  • Hi David,

We are a new website due to launch at the end of April this year. We are doing lots of blogging to try and get traffic to our holding page but it would be good to know how of any companies that write articles about our new site. Obviously being new, we cant yet afford the crazy fees to advertise on the bigger websites.

    Any help would be great!

  • I only know that if you wish to have ad agencies knowing at the door of your blog to post ads, it is getting kinda tougher nowadays. Google has decided not to show any ads on blogs that have stale contents.

So, remember to post contents regularly to your blog. Alright?

  • Hi David, I have been doing my blog daily for over a year now. It is focused on self-development but I also write about politics from a progressive point of view. I am wanting to make money at this so I can support myself. I now have some e-books. I just got signed up for textlinkads. My google adsense was diabled when someone stole my gmail account.

I had 11,000 visitors last month and I work at building traffic all the time. What can I do to make income from my blog.

  • Jason – TTZ Media and Chitika eMinimalls are great for technology/product site and blogs.

Scratchback is good for pretty much any blog, and is basically javascripted text link ads, and shouldn’t effect Google rankings.

Also, you could look at an affiliate program as well.

Direct ad sales have always been my biggest earner. Contact that advertisers on your competition and give them competitive rates for ad space.

Oliver Chesler – I consider Google AdSense to be very trial and error. English people read from left to right, and as such, the further from the left hand side your ad is, the less likely it will be noticed.

Also, the closer the ad is with regards to the content, the more likely it will be clicked.

At the bottom of your content, you have a border around your Google ad, and as such, it stands out rather than blends in as it should.

I have had millions of hours of frustration with Google AdSense.

Karen – If you have something great, go to bloggers and let them know. Start a contest or promotion, or tap into social media by creating content that a site like Digg, StumbleUpon or Reddit would enjoy.

Joseph – Other than what I have mentioned above, I would suggest building your traffic more. Other than that, memberships, products, and other ways to capitalize on your user base, without spamming them is always good.

I would suggest building up a mailing list where you give extra content to them, and also promote paid e-book products that they might enjoy.

You will make more from secondary projects connected to the blog than the blog itself, most likely.

The smartest thing you can do is to be creative as monetization, especially as you make more and more money, isn’t a step by step type thing.

  • I’m new to your blog, so forgive me if you’ve addressed this before.
I run a real estate blog and I just had someone approach me about advertising on my site. They would run real estate ads, so I’m ok with it, but I don’t know where to start.
He said he’d like to advertise with me through text-link ads. I’ve tried to install the text link ads plugin on my blog, but I can’t get it to work.
I don’t know if I need to have that plugin on my blog in order to have people advertise , or what.

So how do I get this guy’s ads on my site?

  • Sorry, I’m pretty new to blogging, but I’ve always wondered how people market their blog to advertisers. Do you actively seek advertisers out, or do you hope that they come to you?

  • Nathan – First off, I wouldn’t recommend using Text-Link-Ads currently if you depend on Google at all. Google has taken a fight against text links. Search for Google versus text link ads or Google hates text links, and you will see many posts outlining what occurred a few months ago.

I would sell it privately, and only place it on your site if you actually recommend it. The quality of the things you link to helps Google rank and judge you.

Lastly, most people that want text links are looking to capitalize on your page rank, and I would recommend thinking about that and figuring out the risk to value ratio on a proposition like that.
