Celebrating Ada Lovelace Day

My “day” work is in magazine publishing – the past two years with men’s interest magazines. Over coffee, two friends from the IT industry asked why can’t more women in technology be featured in the magazines (one of them was referring to the lack of “beauty and brains” in model spreads). This does make sense — more often than not, the bikini + pretty face combination seems to work in the mainstream setting. But really, haven’t we had enough of that?

Today is Ada Lovelace Day, honoring women in the field of information technology and the web. I’ve been blessed to have worked with several great ladies in my industry of IT and publishing (both online and print). Let me call out a few:

I make it a point to see Shai Coggins when she comes home to the Philippines. She is an excellent community builder.

It is true that good friendships can be forged online. Christina Jones was one of the most emphatic minds in my sphere, having managed the b5media community for quite some time before she left to pursue bigger dreams.

There is Aileen Apolo, Google’s consultant for the Philippine market. She recently got engaged — surprised while dangling from a 1 km zipline. Congratulations!

I truly enjoyed my brief yet energized moments with Sacha Chua from the MorPH meet ups.
