5 Tips On How To Handle Criticism In The Comments

Copyblogger has published a list of five things to consider when getting hit by those snarky critics that just want to pick your carefully penned blog post to pieces. We’ve all been there, haven’t we, gotten hit by criticism. Sometimes it is warranted, and sometimes not. It really doesn’t matter, what does is how you handle it.

This is my favorite part from the post:

5. Let it go.
The moment you feel your hackles rising, let it go. If you let it upset you what follows is anger, and to quote Yoda, that leads to the dark side.

I know the feeling, sometimes someone writes something that really hits the soft spot, and I want to break something. Yeah, I’m emotional, and perhaps a bit too sensitive to have thousands of readers, but on the other hand, it is something I can work with.

Check out the post. Good stuff.

I just want to stress one thing: If a comment indeed got to you, don’t answer it right away. Chances are, you’ll write something not so thought-through, or perhaps behave outright badly because you’re so irked.

Remember, while your readers can write whatever they like in your comments (with your more or less silent permission of course), you really shouldn’t drift too far from your blog’s tone. After all, your comments are a part of your blog too, and your readers will judge it just like they do when it comes to your regular writings.

  • I don’t get too many trolls, but I always try to kill them with kindness… because of the point you made: people will judge me based on my response. And my readers are all I care about.

It all depends on how you blast them. You can do so without resorting to blatant name-calling or profanity. Treating trolls as legitimate commenters is like treating a whore as though she were a lady.

  • Let it go, boy that true and hard advice at the same time. Sometimes I wonder why individuals take time out of their life to write nasty and over the top critical comments/emails. It is important to step away and how I do respond is important not just for my readers on the site but also for my own integrity. Thank You for this post!

  • Harsh words, Mike. It might, however, work if that fits the tone of your blog I guess. Otherwise I personally prefer GoingLikeSixty’s method, ie trying to take it down in a civil matter.

GatorWade: So true. And thanks for the kind words!

  • If someone comments on a post and criticises what you are saying and can back up there comments and I can see there point of view then it doesn’t bother me that much because we are all entitled to our opinions, but what really annoys me is when they criticise you and just leave it at that and don’t give you a reason why.

  • Internet is the most democratic medium for people. ‘Uncontrolled’ comments might be one of the consequences. It is just fine basically. We may take some lessons from it somehow. From Make Quick Cash John

  • Critics from visitors can be seed positive as long as we have some courage to face the fact of people’s feedback. We can get better improvement afterward. Let them talk, I agree with this. From Vacant Home Staging
