Ning Declares War On Spammers (Launches Twilight Quiz?)

With human flavored spam on the rise, Ning is launching 3 weapons to help members fight the good fight and keep those “enhancement” products off of their respective forums and blogs.

While Ning is sadly adopting the use of CAPTCHA’s (a tool that no longer works thanks to nefarious spam bots and human spammers), as well as email verification (which can land in the spam folder), their “Twilight quizzes” may help thwart spammers (whether virtual or in the flesh).

Adding a quiz to your Ning Network’s sign-up makes it difficult for a spammer (or potential spammer) to join. Why? Because they’d need to take the time to research the answer your question correctly — and that’s the opposite of what they want to do! […]

Let’s say, for example, I run The Twilight Saga and I want to make sure that every person who joins my Ning Network is a true Twilight fan and not a spammer or troll. I would want to add a question that every new member should know the answer to, like “What is the name of the second Twilight novel?” Capitalization doesn’t matter, so members can answer “New Moon” or “new moon” and either would be enough to prove that they’re a real person who loves Twilight. Although this anti-spam feature may be considered as yet another annoying barrier for the potential commenter, customized mini quizzes could be the ultimate weapon to help kill off human spammers.

Since most human spammers are (to put it bluntly) lazy, evil beings seeking a quantity of comments (as opposed to creating a quality comment), they will probably skip over any blog requiring a quiz and instead look for a blog with less defenses.

Note: Self hosting WordPress guru’s can install the Quiz plugin which will provide a similar effect upon their blogs. If anyone knows of a similar solution for MovableType or Blogger fans, feel free to inform the rest of us below.

  • The spam problem has become a HUGE problem on social media sites and on social networks, as well as, on blogs.

As a visually challenged person I find most CAPTCHA s to be a a barrier to me. Knowing that they are also ineffectual and knowing that Ning has chosen to use them does not make me a happy camper.

I have not viewed Twight Saga and have no idea what it’s about so now I am faced with surfing the internet so I can answer questions about it and that doesn’t make me smile either.

It’s my opinion that asking a simple math question may have been more effective and at least it would not put folks like me, who aren’t movie buffs and who rarely even watch TV at all, in a bad place when it comes to answering questions.

  • Is this a joke? What if I was to genuinely comment on a Blog’s post and not know anything about Twilight.

    – I’m actually really mad now, especially since it’s Twilight.

Then what business would you have commenting on a TWILIGHT BLOG?

That’s the idea here, to make comments relevant.
