With more than 800 million people logging into a Facebook account at least one time each month it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Facebook was the top searched term of 2011.

According to Experian Hitwise this is the third year in a row Facebook has topped the most search list as the company accounts for 3.1% of all searches, a 46% increase over 2010 numbers.

That search percentage jumps to 3.48 percent if you include variations on the search such as Facebook.com, Facebook Login and www.facebook.com among others.

In face those terms mentions above appear in the top 10 search terms right alongside the likes of YouTube, Craigslist and Yahoo.

Here are the top 10 searches of 2011:

  • 1. Facebook
  • 2. YouTube
  • 3. Facebook Login
  • 4. Craigslist
  • 5. Facebook.com
  • 6. Yahoo
  • 7. eBay
  • 8. www.facebook.com
  • 9. Mapquest
  • 10. Yahoo.com

Facebook’s closest competitor YouTube accounted for 1.36% of searches, a 21% increase over 2010 but still far behind Facebook’s astronomical search levels.

This particular list focused on single word search terms which included variations on URLs as highlighted by various Facebook terms being included in the list.

Does the Hitwise survey surprise you? Given the fact that Facebook is far and away the most visited destination on the web in terms of user engagement I’m actually surprised they don’t control more of the internet visitor market.
