Is Your Blog A Bore? – 5 Ways to Make Your Blog More Visually Interesting

Black and white blog posts aren’t nearly as successful as they used to be. Though blogging is a timeless way to convey information to consumers and garner attention for your website, if you don’t have enough visual interest within that platform, you’ll have a difficult time making them stay.

Visual interest within a blog is key to reducing bounce rates and encouraging readers to come back to your blog. The human brain processes visuals much better than text. In fact, 90 percent of information that reaches the brain is visual, and it’s processed 60,000 times faster than text, according to a blog post from Wishpond.com. The post also shows that those who use infographics experience an average of 12 percent more growth than those who ignore the visual side of things.

Visuals within a blog can speak volumes more than text, and it’s an important step in improving your blog. If you’re looking to make a difference in your overall business through your blog, consider these tips.

1. Research Top Blogs

Begin by looking at the blogs that do really well. It doesn’t have to be a commercial business blog for you to learn some great lessons. For example, take a look at BuzzFeed, one of the leading blogs on the web right now. Look through several of their posts and how they balance text and imagery. They also have a great design that encourages readers to click through to even more of their posts. You won’t be able to mimic everything they do, but there are several tricks to be learned within their site.

2. Consider Overall Design

Look at the design of your blog and ask yourself one question about every feature: Does this improve the overall user experience? This means if your navigation or search bar makes it more difficult to find relevant information on your blog, you need a change.

When it comes to blog design, some of the most important elements include easy navigation, easy readability, a splash header, a site-map footer, “about the author” sections, and a complementary color scheme. Good website design isn’t hard to find these days, and if readers don’t find it on your blog, they’ll go somewhere else.

3. Use Visuals, Including Animation

There are hundreds of ways you can use visuals within a blog post to improve reception. Photography, videos, screenshots, infographics, data visualizations, comics, memes, visual note-taking, and other miscellaneous graphics can be used to enhance any form of text. Mix and match the types of visuals you use within a post. For example, you might use an infographic to help readers visualize a blog post.

This article from Housing.com is a great example of how to incorporate multiple visuals into one blog. Besides the use of a high-quality feature image, the blog post also includes photos scattered among the text, and even uses a fun and helpful animation to help demonstrate the point.

4. Use the Right Images

It’s important to use multiple photos throughout a blog post, but it’s even more important to use the right ones. Sure it’s easy to throw a simple stock image at the top of your blog post, but it needs to be the right one in order to have the most impact.

According to an infographic from QuickSprout, blog content that uses relevant images gets 94 percent more views than content without images or with low-quality, irrelevant images. Tweets that have high quality images on Buffer also receive 150 percent more retweets. These kinds of statistics are only made possible if you use relevant and intriguing images and stay away from boring, overused, low-quality stock images.

5. Include Widgets

Widgets that show other blog posts written by you are an excellent feature to both reduce bounce rate and to catch the eye of your blog readers. Many companies like to use multiple widgets on the sidebar, the header, and the footer of the article to include a high volume of other blog posts.

However, simply using one widget with multiple tabs for “popular,” “recent,” and “breaking” news can help to reduce the clutter on your website to give it a more professional look, without sacrificing the usefulness of the widget. Include images with the featured blog post in order to attract even more attention.

Higher conversions and reduced bounce rates might be just around the corner for your company blog. Perhaps all you need is a little visual interest for your content to soar to new heights.
