Fake Steve Jobs “busted” by journalist

It appears that Fake Steve Jobs has been busted by a New York Times’ reporter by the name of Brad Stone.

It turns out that FSJ is Daniel Lyons, technology writer for Forbes, who just so happen to be backing the blog as of today. Well, well.

Lyons wrote on the FSJ blog:

Well it had to happen. Honestly I can’t believe it’s taken this long. But as you may have heard, I’ve been busted by a newspaper reporter. My cover has been blown. Guy named Brad Stone, who works for the New York Times. Have you heard of him? Well, tip of the hat to you, Brad Stone. You did the sleuthing. You put the pieces of the puzzle together. You went through my trash, hacked into my computer, and put listening devices in my home. Now you’ve ruined the mystery of Fake Steve, robbing thousands of people around the world of their sense of childlike wonder.

Mauricio Freitas laments that FSJ’s identity was blown by a newspaper reporter and not a blogger, whilst, according to the Forbes report, some bloggers were peeved that the Times had broken the story:

With all of the real news that needs to be sleuthed by a talented reporter such as yourself, isn’t it more than a little sophomoric to cover this at your paper and, at the same time, ruin a perfectly good bit of sport?

It was fun while it lasted.

  • What a snotty piece of whining he wrote about getting busted.

What, lamenting the fact that a journalist is doing his job, ie bringing something new to the table on a subject which has wide public attention? What’s next?

He does have a point though: journalists were all asleep at the switch in the run-up to the Iraq war, running scared.

  • Worst thing was that it was a Forbes writer. i didn’t think anything creative would come from someone at Forbes.
