First Tweet From Space Isn’t Really From Space

Astronaut Mike Massimino has sent the first tweet from space, making all the rocket buffs green with envy I presume.

From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!

You can follow Mike yourself for more in the future (also: Techmeme). However, don’t get too worked up by getting real-time twittering from Space, because that’s not how it works. A NASA spokesperson told OrlandoSentinel.com that the space shuttle doesn’t have an ever present internet connection. So what Mike does is that he writes an email that gets sent to Mission Control whenever the shuttle has a connection, and then the folks there update his Twitter account for him.

Still, pretty cool.

To make it a real Tweet from space, why not just update his Twitter once the shuttle gets a connection? He was able to send emails, why not a Tweet?
