Lycos Launches free Tripod Moblogging: may start price war
Terra Lycos today launched new enhanced free features to its Blog Builder™ tool taking the Lycos Blog Builder to the next level and potentially making it a threat to some of the more established blog providers.
The new enhancements include free moblogging, new digital media uploading tools to allow the easy addition of photos, video and audio to blogs, all with the release of previously paid features to free members, including spell check, community blogs and advanced customization.
“We surveyed our millions of Tripod members and found there was a very high usage of the latest digital technology and gadgets to keep in touch and share information with others,” said Jamie Riehle, group product manager of Web Publishing for Lycos. “So we’re now making it easier than ever for our members to post and share digital content with friends and family on Tripod.”
All blog features previously available to only paying Tripod members are now available to all Tripod bloggers. Free members, however, will be restricted to only three blogs while paying members will have unlimited blogs, not unlike SixApart and MovableType.
The paid, ad free options are surprisingly competitive and will may well result in a price war in the coming months as the increasingly large number of participants in the blog hosting sector compete for new paying subscribers, in a marketplace which continues to offer more and more for free.
Additionally, Lycos has announced plans to roll out these same Blog Builder enhancements to Angelfire members in the coming weeks.
