PubSub launches new LinkRanks service

Blogosphere tracking company PubSub.com, today announced the formal release of PubSub LinkRanks tool for tracking the popularity and influence of blogs and websites. This service provides detailed data that bloggers and feed publishers can use to actively monitor the results of their publishing efforts, and gain insight into how to improve their future rank and influence.

PubSub LinkRanks measures the strength, persistence, and vitality of links appearing in the web feeds monitored by PubSub. PubSub has also made available the PubSub LinkRanks 1000, a list of the most consistently influential sites that publish feeds, based on their average LinkRank scores during the past 30 days.

“Unlike other ranking systems, PubSub LinkRanks does more than just show you which sites are influential today, we also show which sites have had influence over the last 15 and 30 days. This multi-period ranking approach is something quite new and we’€™re very pleased with the insight it provides,” said Bob Wyman, CTO and co-founder of PubSub Concepts, Inc. “PubSub LinkRanks is an essential tool for people looking for an accurate way to measure how well their messages are propagating over time, or for companies looking to keep a pulse on their standing in the market.”

The noticable difference to bloggers using the service is that PubSub also covers mainstream media sites that bloggers link to, providing a more hybrid picture than pure blog plays such as Blogpulse and the Feedster 500.

  • Unfortunately, the way that PubSub defines links is a little confusing. I’ve talked to Mark about it and still am not totally clear. They also rely on second-hand summary data and at times things at my site have been totally out of whack. Putting no entries for days then piling them all on the same day.

I still don’t get how the percentage ranking works.

  • EnglishGuy: If your blog isn’t showing up, then it is probably because we don’t know about it. Please use the add_feed form on our site to let us know you exist. see: http://www.pubsub.com/add_feed.php Alternatively, ping either us (http://xping.pubsub.com/ping) or one of the other pinging services like Ping-O-Matic and please use extendedPing.

ME Strauss: An InLink is simply someone linking to you. An OutLink is a link from your blog to someone else. If it looks like we’re “batching” the data for you, this is probably because you aren’t pinging us. That means that we read your feed on a lower priority than feeds that ping us. Sometimes, the scheduled feeds can be delayed a bit. If you ping us (using extendedPing — which includes a pointer to your feed) we should be keeping up to date with your publishing in near-realtime.

  • Still the problem is that this site measures raw numbers and equates that with “influential”. That’s one measure. Its like the wild west at the moment on claims of influence and ranking. Everyone has a different view and the same website or blog does well on this ranking but not there, on that one. And surely influence can mean speaking to exactly the audience you want to hear you through your blog. That can’t be measured accurately.
