How Furthering Your Formal Education Can Help You as a Blogger

Anyone can be a blogger, right? All you need is to have an idea – or tons of them, some clue as to the technology (what platform to use, for example), and some social media/content marketing skills. If you only have ideas, it’s still possible to blog. There is certainly no lack of  tutorials and guides for beginning bloggers, and if you want to take things further, there are more advanced guides as well.

But what if you really want to make a splash and play with the big boys and girls? What is it that you need to do?

The not-so-good news is that there really is no clear cut answer to that question. Blogging guides generally cover the same ground:

  • Find your niche.
  • Find your voice.
  • Follow the leading bloggers in your niche, and learn from them.
  • Read, read, and read some more.
  • Learn a little SEO and content marketing.
  • Engage with readers and other bloggers.
  • Plus some more…

Going to school is not a common piece of advice you read for bloggers. As I said from the get go, anyone can blog. However, not everyone can reach the level of popularity and success that the top probloggers today have achieved.

How can you replicate their success?

Certainly not by throwing anything and everything you can think of at the wall and hoping something will stick. There has to be something more to blogging success than that, and one way is to choose a niche that you are already comfortable with – and have some knowledge of.

And that’s where furthering formal education can come in handy.

One thing that you will commonly read in posts about being a successful blogger is this: establish yourself as an authority in your field.

And just how do you do that?

As I mentioned in the previous section, choose a niche that you already have some degree of mastery. Your knowledge and experience in this niche will certainly help you publish posts that are credible, legitimate, and useful to your target audience.

More than that, however, there is the idea of furthering your formal education. You may already have years of experience in the field, but getting another degree, or a post graduate degree in that niche will certainly add to your knowledge and authority.

The good news is that there are a lot of options for furthering your formal education.

If you have the luxury of time and money, it would be awesome to consider educational institutions which offer a global perspective and experience. In doing so, not only will you be formally learning in the classroom, but you will also have an immersive experience in other cultures, and with the Internet practically erasing geographical boundaries, this is a huge plus for you as a blogger.

Of course, if you cannot leave home, there are your local colleges and universities. For sure, there is at least one school within reasonable vicinity which will offer the program you want to take up.

Last, there are online universities. While there are some online universities which do not have a very good reputation, legitimate ones do exist. Additionally, there are traditional universities which have online “branches”. These would certainly help more in terms of time and logistics.

There are plenty of mini courses and one-on-one tuturing opportunities out there, with experts using marketplaces and white labeled e-leraning platforms to offer valuable knowledge products.

Whichever option you go for, the fact remains that you – and your blog – can reap big benefits from furthering your formal education. You don’t have to, of course, but it could very well be the push that you need.
