How to place Google Adsense ads next to your text
Duncan Riley> There are lots of theories out there about the best ways of improving your returns from Google Adsense ads on your blog, but the one theory I keep reading time and time again is inline placement, ie placing a Google Adsense box (or similar program) actually inside your post as opposed to above your posts or to the side, like the advertising here at The Blog Herald. Now I’€™ve not implemented that strategy here at the Blog Herald because I simply feel that even further advertisements will take away the effectiveness of the current ads on the page, particularly those who have paid directly or through BlogAds to be seen here. Having said this though I’€™ve been working with a number of other blogs recently, in providing some advice, and I can tell you this: if you want to increase your Adsense click thrus and therefore revenue, and are not shy about ad placement, inline is the way to go. Lockergnome is a reasonable example of the strategy, note the Adsense ads essentially inside the confines of the post. Darren Rowse of Problogger fame (who has also spoke in favour of the strategy) uses it well over at the Digital Photograhpy Blog.
Now, you can put the ad block with every post on your main page but I strongly recommend against it. In many blogging tools now, you are able to have a special template for individual pages that is separate to your main page. Only place it on this. Best of all, its not that hard. Within the confines of your template, and I’€™d recommend between the title and the content, put the following in
div style=”float: right; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border-width: 0px 0px 10px 5px; border-style: solid; border-color: White; background-color: white”
(don’t forget to add < and > at the beginning and end)>
following this paste your Adsense or other advertising script directly after this, then close with a /div (again add <> either side)
The code will place your ad in the top right hand corner of your post. Tweaking the elements can also change the placement, but for most purposes this code will do the trick.
The size of the ad also depends on the length of the post and the width of the page. If you’re mainly writing short to a medium posts, I’d keep the format to a 120×240 2 ad box or similar, if you’€™ve got a wider text area or longer posts by all means go for something bigger. The trick is to bring the ad into the immediate view of the reader without spoiling the looks or aesthetics of the page.
If your up to a little coding, and want to try something to bring in some extra dollars, its well worth giving a try.
Excellent tip, thanks! I’d been thinking of doing this, but hesitated because I didn’t want to jack my pages while I experimented. This’ll save a lot of time…
Thanks for the great info. The ads are part of the experience for me. It’s not that difficult to avoid clicking on them if they don’t appeal to you and they are sometimes of help to me and are always of help to the writer.
I say show ’em if you got ’em !
Nice tip.
Inspired me to change the style of adsens unit in my website http://labnol.blogspot.com
Good piece Duncan. It seems like it is just a matter of time before people look at the large Adsense rectangles as they do banner advertisements.
Guys,
There is a piece of warning here. The above code may no longer work with Blogger.
