Facebook For Kids. Social Network Re-Examines 13 And Under Policy

June 4, 2012 by James Johnson

Facebook currently forbids users under the age of 13 from using its platform however a simple terms of service (TOS) notice has failed to keep millions of underage users from using the website. Now rumors are circulating that Facebook may soon offer a solution that allows younger kids to use Facebook while their parents still hold control over their accounts.

One potential program would allow parents to approve apps, friend requests and other options their kids choose while using the network, essentially ensuring that children are not friending strangers and acting in any other unscrupulous manner.

According to a statement released by Facebook:

“Many recent reports have highlighted just how difficult it is to enforce age restrictions on the Internet, especially when parents want their children to access online content and services. We are in continuous dialogue with stakeholders, regulators and other policymakers about how best to help parents keep their kids safe in an evolving online environment.”

A recent study found that as much as 38% of children on Facebook are under 12-years-old.

While Facebook has attempted to keep strict control over its use even Federal Trade Commission chair Jon Leibowitz acknowledged last month that it may be time for Facebook and other websites to find a way for children to safely use their networks.

For Facebook opening up its network to potentially hundreds of millions of new users with a new demographic could mean more advertising dollars from its media buying partners.

Do you think children under 13-years-old should be allowed on Facebook?
