Foursquare Users Upload One Photo Per Second
Foursquare users using the popular iPhone app were given the ability this week to upload photos to their check-ins and comment on their own and other friends photos and with that new option has come a huge increase in the number of photos being uploaded to the location based service.
Foursquare founder Dennis Crowley has announced that every one second a photo is being uploaded to the site and that number is expected to increase when the Android photo sharing option goes live today.
With the increase in the number of photos being uploaded to the site and that number expected to grow rapidly as Foursquare’s market share continues to grow, Crowley is working the rounds to ensure that the issue of scale is dealt with.
Crowley in a Tweet told @benpopper:
“Ha, We spent all summer scaling in infrastructure in anticipation of this. And nooowww it’s time for the new features to roll out.”
In October the Foursquare site went down for a short period of time and was later revealed to have occurred because of too many check-ins at one time, obviously photos are more resource intensive, which means keeping an eye on your apps load times over the next few weeks might be an interesting look into how well they are scaling their systems as needed.
